General

  • In Ancient Greek, Zoe Ζωή (IPA: [zdɔː.ɛ̌ː] > [zo'i]) means "life", as opposed to "death";[1] while its cognate βῐ́ο(το)ς bio(to)s means "lifetime" or "the living's world".[2]
    • Both come from PIE root *gʷeyh₃- "to live".[3]
  • Upon jumping out of Portal Jump's Portal Jump's second portal, Zoe licks the ice cream cone, which she attempts to eat during her joke animation (Ctrl+1).
  • Zoe has multiple walk cycles that change randomly over the course of the game, but players can also toggle the next one using the Toggle key bind (default [Ctrl] + [5]).
  • Her dance references Tez Cadey - Seve.
    • A side-by-side comparison can be seen here.
  • Her title, as found on the store, "Zoe, The Aspect of Twilight" is one of the few occurrences, along with Kayn Kayn, Taliyah Taliyah, Aurelion Sol Aurelion Sol, Illaoi Illaoi, Elise Elise, Sion Sion, of having the word "the" capitalized, compared to all other champions' titles.

Development

  • Zoe is voiced by Erica Lindbeck, who also voices Taliyah Taliyah and Morgana Morgana.
  • During development, she was called Mirror Mage.[4]
  • Zoe's initial teaser would spawn Sleepy Trouble Bubble Sleepy Trouble Bubble in both Summoner's Rift icon Summoner's Rift bases at the beginning of the game.
  •  Usually, Twilight denotes dusk & connotes old age, as well as the approaching end (cf. Ragnarøkkr "the gods' twilight"); yet Zoe embodies "mischief, change, and imagination".
  • When asked about Zoe's cartoon-like design , Reav3 stated that Zoe's physical features are disproportionately designed much like Annie Annie to show her detailed expressions and to have her character read more easily as a child.

Lore

  • As mentioned in her lore, Zoe Zoe is at the very least older than 1000 years as after her ascension she has was in the cosmic realm for a millennia before returning back to Runeterra.
    • Zoe is physically and mentally a teenager, between 13 - 17 years old.
  • She likes eating Chocolate Mooncakes.
    • She also likes butterflies, unicorns, and watching the end of finite realities.
  • Her scarf is knitted from the wool of an Erbok.
  • Zoe is the second-released champion from the Lunari Lunari order.
  • Zoe can move freely with her unnaturally long hair due to magic.
  • While the celestials rarely intervene with the mortal realms, the Aspect of Twilight and its hosts are the exception.
  • The Aspect of Twilight serves as a celestial messenger and the herald of changes.
    • The Aspect of Twilight chose Zoe when looking for its next vessel because she was so naturally going to be and act like it needed to. It knew/felt/saw on some level that it needed to change... because the world was changing and what it represented was changing.
    • The Ionia Crest icon Ionians use of twilight is separate to the meaning given to it by Targon Crest icon Targonians. Ionia considers twilight as a time of when dark and light are in balance while Targonians view it as a time of transition or change.
Myisha, the Aspect of Twilight during the Darkin war [5]
  • Myisha was the host of the Aspect during the Great Darkin war and based on the description from Twilight of the Gods, she was possibly a young adult when she became its host.
  • She was somewhat violating the Prime Directive, giving mortals the power to defeat the Darkin with 'plausible deniability...' of a sort. "Hey, I didn't do it, these mortals did..."
  • It was more perversely fun for her to have these god-warriors tricked into destroying themselves instead of confronting them directly. Part of how Tricksters operate is by getting others to do their dirty work, because (like, say, in Loki's case) they're not strong enough to take direct action. In a straight up fight, MCU Thor would likely kick Loki's ass, so Loki 'flanks' (or attempts to) all the time. The Trickster always masks their identity to better aid the trick, and had the Darkin truly sensed who she was, she'd possibly just have fled rather than fight, though not without causing some damage first.
    • At the end of Twilight of the Gods, when Myisha has succeeded in tricking the Darkin and erasing many of them, the Chalicar Chalicar had absorbed the - for want of of a better phrase - Darkin DNA essence, which - combined with Ta'anari's heart - would allow humans to craft the weapons tailored to trap the Darkin at a later date.
      • Myisha turned the combined power of the Darkin (and aspects) against them, so she 'force multiplied' that moment in the amphitheater to be powerful enough to achieve what she wanted.

Skins

Original Zoe Original Zoe
  • Inspirations for Zoe are possibly:
  • She is the first heterochromic champion (not counting Bittersweet Lulu Bittersweet Lulu). Her right eye is purple, and the other is teal.
  • Her icons differ from the splash art, not having her hand around her eye.
  • Zoe carries around a moonstone, a chime of Bard Bard, and a key belonged to Fiddlesticks Fiddlesticks.[8][9]
    • She also has a little purple pouch next to her other trinkets which is very hard to notice on her splashart, but is easily visible on her in-game model.
Cyber Pop Zoe Cyber Pop Zoe
  • Due to fan requests during the PBE cycle [10], this skin also displays Heterochromia iridum. Her right eye is blue, and her left is green.
  • Spell Thief's Spell Thief's bubbles can have a variety of emoticons in them: "(°☒°)", "(^-^)", "( ° ʖ °)", "^_^", "u_u", "=P", ":)", ";)".
  • The balloons, which Spell Thief Spell Thief causes to float above some minions, contain an icon based on the blank sheet of paper that files which have no designated icon are displayed with by operating systems such as Microsoft Windows. The icon in the balloons has a star on it.
  • Portal Jump's Portal Jump's portals might be inspired by Portal.
  • When the Sleepy Trouble Bubble Sleepy Trouble Bubble trap is placed, it reads ".EXE", which is an executable program extension on Microsoft Windows. When the bubble is primed on an enemy, an image similar to the Blue Screen of Death shows up.
  • Upon death, a screencap appears above Zoe's body. It shows the centre of Summoner's Rift (or middle lane) shaded gray, the death recap, and the HUD of Cyber Pop Zoe that lacks team frames and items. This screencap says that she died by Paddle Star Paddle Star.
  • The background of her splash art was inspired by Splatoon and Blade Runner 2049.
    • Her appearance was inspired by the classic Splatoon girl.
    • Lollipoppy's Lollipoppy's lollipops are also in the bag she's carrying.
Pool Party Zoe Pool Party Zoe
Chromaskins Chromas: Amethyst, Emerald, Rainbow, Rose Quartz, Ruby, Sapphire
Star Guardian Zoe Star Guardian Zoe
Chromaskins Chromas: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Citrine, Emerald, Jasper, Pearl, Rose Quartz, Ruby
  • Star Guardian Rakan Star Guardian Rakan and Star Guardian Xayah Star Guardian Xayah can be seen in the background of her splash art.
  • Ran profileicon Ran, Zoe's familiar spirit, acts as her Sleepy Trouble Bubble Sleepy Trouble Bubble and her second cast of Paddle Star Paddle Star. Ran also acts as Zoe's yo-yo in one of her walking animations.
    • Ran is inspired by Tokyo Mew Mew's infusers, jellyfish-like aliens that turn living creatures into monsters. Ran serves a similar purpose, acting as Zoe's corrupting bubble.
  • This skin continues the trend of Zoe related appearances having Heterochromia iridum. Her right eye is purple, and her left is blue.
    • It also carries forward the jellyfish motif introduced by Cyber Pop Zoe.

Relations

  • Being the celestial messenger of Mount Targon Mount Targon, she knows of all of their Aspects, their hosts, and servants.
    • She respects Aurelion Sol Aurelion Sol as if he were her pet and defended him from the wrath of Pantheon Pantheon, the Aspect of War.
  • She "borrowed" a chime from Bard Bard and Bard noticed and was cool with it, or it was given to her. Zoe heralds change while Bard prevents disasters, so they probably meet from time to time.
  • Zoe Zoe really likes Ezreal Ezreal, and as such she considers Lux Lux her rival.
  • The previous Aspect of Twilight, Myisha, led the Darkin Ta'anari to Nasus Nasus who guided them to the Chalicar, the blade that belonged to the Ascended queen Setaka and belongs to Sivir Sivir in the present day, which Ta'anari later used to perform a ritual that reverted the Ascension of the nearby Darkins, vaporing them. She and other Targonian Aspects later gave the mortals the tool to trap the remaining Darkins.
    • As a result, the Darkins, who are now roaming free again, especially Aatrox Aatrox, despise every Aspect and their host, most noticeably The Aspect of Twilight/Zoe.
