Vrynna was born and raised by a clan in the Winter's Claw. Her father died when she was a child. She and her sister learned to hunt, fight, and survive in the harsh environment of the Freljord, protected by the clan. She was friends with Hrolur, son of Sigrun Ice-Runner, who was just one year older than her. He was the first who called her "unscarred", a joke shared between them because he had a scar from tripping and hitting his head.
In her teenage years, the Storm Crows, a rivaling clan, attacked the camp. Vrynna's mother hid her, and fought the reavers. She killed three before she was taken down by an arrow. Vrynna's sister was also killed in that raid, leaving her without any family. After the massacre was over, Vrynna found the dying Hrolur; she stayed by his side until the clan's warriors came back.
Vrynna wanted to join the war party that was supposed to enact revenge, but was deemed too young. Her mother's friend, Ice-Runner, went instead. They returned a day later, successful in their own raid. Ice-Runner had not spoken a word, but they bonded over their loss.
A Good Day
During a desperate hunt, after their clan's winter reserves had run out, Vrynna, Shiverbones, Halgar, Rylor, and Ice-Runner went after a thunderhorn. A snowstorm was raging, and they considered turning back, but Vrynna convinced them to go on. They found their prey already dead, slain by a wildclaw which then attacked the hunters. In the fight against the wildclaw, Rylor and Ice-Runner were killed, Halgar broke his leg, and Vrynna lost her right eye. After they had slain the beast, the survivors returned to the clan, which could survive more than a month on the thunderhorn. In the following feast, Shiverbones, the leader of the hunt, called Vrynna a Scarmaiden for the first time since she was no longer unscarred.

In the following years, Vrynna survived many battles and proved herself to be a formidable leader, leading to her advancement to Scarmother. During this time, she also met Brokvar Ironfist, her champion and sometimes lover.
The Shackles of Belief
When she was leading a raid southward, Vrynna spotted a . She wanted to move on and leave him to die, but her shamanka, Thorva, decided to save him instead. As soon as he touched the shaman, he was able to endure the temperature, but she passed out from the sudden cold. Vrynna and the rest of her party closed in, and she decided Brokvar Ironfist has the honor to kill him.
To everyone's surprise, the outsider held his own against the Iceborn warrior, but was eventually overpowered. Just as he went for the killing blow, he was stopped by Thorva. In the confusion, the outsider picked up the True Ice weapon and ice began to claim him. Vrynna again ordered Brokvar to kill him, but the man managed to touch the Iceborn and survived. Interpreting this as a sign of the gods, the scarmother let him live.
It turned out that the shamanka Thorva spoke his language, and the outsider was called Demacia, seeking allies against his people. Vrynna was still suspicious, but Thorva convinced her to let him come with them.. He claimed to know secret ways into

Vrynna does not trust Sylas and his promises of riches, but allowed him to join their raiding party to prove himself. Her shamanka Thorva, who flirted with Sylas a little, is responsible for him. It is unclear what happened to them between The Shackles of Belief and Warriors.
