Brackern[]

Surrounded around the Shuriman Continent are several clans of Brackern, including clans in the Shuriman desert.

Dormun[]

The Dormun are gigantic, slow-moving creatures protected with large chitinous plates covering their body. In the harsh conditions of Shurima they have evolved to survive the perpetual drought by utilizing an unknown sense to locate hidden reservoirs of water. Incidentally, certain nomadic tribes have built themselves a permanent home upon the backs of these beasts where they clean the creature and hunt any airborne pests who venture near.

Eka'Sul[]

Desert goats that travel in herds.

Mwatis[]

Mwatis are goatlike creatures with large plated casques on their heads. Mwati wool and plate are prised for felting and insulation.

Kmiros[]

Gigantic scarabs that roam in swarms, looking for unfortunate travelers to feed on. They seem to be common prey for Rammus Rammus.

Outerbeasts[]

Beside the Xer'Sai, other creatures from the Void, referred to as 'outerbeasts', can be found in the desert.

  • Xer'Sai: Creatures from the Void that plague the southern deserts. They are the size of big dogs on average, but can be smaller or much bigger. Rek'Sai Rek'Sai, as the queen, is by far the largest and most dangerous of her species. Xer'sai burst from their small burrows and ravage anything nearby, to the detriment of desert caravans. Once dead, the Xer'sai decompose at an abnormally rapid rate and become inedible.

Ralsiji[]

Large and aggressive minotaur-like creatures. They are humpbacked quadrupeds with long limbs and thick horns.

Shuriman Camel[]

A breed of camels native to the deserts of Shurima and are used by caravans as well as common folk as primary mode of transportation. Despite being well-suited for lengthy travels in the desert landscape, they are still prey to a many predator such as the Xer'Sai.

Sandswimmers[]

Shurima Sandswimmers

Sandswimmers

Sandswimmers are massive quadrupedal creatures that traverse the Shuriman desert in cyclical patterns. They got their name due to their preferred method of travel. Their narrow bodies and webbed feet are perfectly design for swimming under the sand. They feed on bugs and other small creatures most desert beasts ignore. Scavengers will often memorize the predictable paths these creatures take, and jump onto their backs to ride as far as they wish.

Skallashi[]

The Skallashi are large quadrupedal herbivores. These hardy beasts of burden are common across Shurima, ideally suited to the harsh desert environment. Their key body feature is their long legs. Notoriously bad-tempered, they are nevertheless treated with great reverence. Their brown hides are often painted with sacred symbols of protection, and their horns hung with totems and charms. While these creatures are mostly used for travel and carrying heavy loads, on some larger skallashi people are able to built miniature rooms for more comfortable travel. To own one is often considered a sign of considerable prosperity.

It is unclear if Vel'Koz Vel'Koz was the first Voidborn to emerge on Runeterra, but there has certainly never been another to match his level of cruel, calculating sentience. While his kin devour or defile everything around them, he seeks instead to scrutinize and study the physical realm—and the strange, warlike beings that dwell there—for any weakness the Void might exploit. But Vel'Koz is far from a passive observer, striking back at threats with deadly plasma, or by disrupting the very fabric of the world itself.

Background[]

Origin[]

One of the first Voidborn, created by the hands of the Watchers, who has been known by many names but the ancient Shurimans named it Vel'Koz, or "to understand by unmaking". Vel'Koz was created to watch, listen and learn from the living, so the Watchers could know best how to destroy them. And so Vel'Koz did, silently observing the various landscapes of Runeterra, watching as civilizations rise and fall. Now and again it travels back through the great rifts in the fabric of Runeterra, back into the Void to relay everything it has seen before promptly returning back to the goal of its existance.

But to understand, sometimes requires unmaking. Vel'Koz often leaves towns empty, with no sign of struggles except for the withered husks of its former residents, with a distinct dark pit where their left eye would be; a wound left by Vel'Koz's devouring of knowledge.

Destruction of Tokogol[]

Fairly recently, Vel'Koz has been sighted in the region of Tokogol where it destroyed the region's namesake village.

Appearance[]

Vel'Koz is a floating, otherworldly creature, composed almost entirely of three tentacles and a single, massive eye. His central eye is a glowing, violet orb with a dark, catlike pupil, though he also seems to have three smaller eyes protruding from stalks. His tentacles are dark turquoise at the base, fading into bright violet at the tips. He wears a pale, golden armor over his frame.

Personality[]

As a Voidborn, Vel'Koz is shown to be extremely dispassionate towards the denizens of Runeterra. He has zero empathy for the people he studies and executes his tasks with cold and calculated efficiency. However, unlike other Voidborn, Vel'Koz is not obsessed with destruction or consuming the world around him but instead to observe and collect information about the world of Runeterra. This puts his seemingly-cruel approach in a different light, as it appears his experiments are borne solely out of curiosity. To that end, accumulating knowledge seems to be his only drive, and he does this by annihilating the subjects of his study.

Abilities[]

  • Voidborn: Vel'Koz is a Voidborn, a being birthed from the Void to enter the material realm. Because the Void possesses different laws of reality, Voidborn have to create new bodies from the matter of Runeterra.
    • Knowledge Absorption: Vel'Koz can absorb the knowledge of other living beings by inserting one of his tentacles inside of them. By absorbing the knowledge of other living beings, he leaves them as nothing more than withered husks.
    • Void Energy Emission: Vel'Koz can emit powerful beams of Void energy from both his tentacles and his eye. He can control the intensity of these beams from small surgical cuts to massive blasts of destructive power.
    • Levitation: Vel'Koz generally moves by floating above the ground.
    • Tentacles: Vel'Koz can use the tentacles to smash, grip, and crush foes as well as project void energy.

Relations[]

Humans[]

Kassadin Kassadin seeks to keep the Voidborn from crossing over to Runeterra and thus is his enemy (and a nice research subject). Malzahar Malzahar on the other hand seeks to facilitate the crossing and thus is his ally (Vel'Koz is no stranger to killing other Voidborn who might destroy his research materials, though).

A Different Hunger

By Ian St. Martin

With a kiss to my wife and resting my spear against my shoulder, I joined my fellows as we left the village. The morning was new, dawn stretching through the thick forests of Tokogol as the six of us made our way to the watch point by a worn dirt path. We were travelling light, as our vigil would only last until the next moon before another band of spearmen took our place. Tokogol shared borders with Noxus, and its increasing belligerence of late had stirred the house lords to ensure that all of their spears were honed.

Instrument of Destruction

By Leslee Sullivant Heintz

A tentacled horror of the Void, Vel'Koz explores Runeterra with singular purpose: to absorb all knowledge. With his unceasing gaze, Vel'Koz fires disintegrating beams that obliterate and analyze all in his path, feeding him vast quantities of information. None know why he requires such material, though some speculate he seeks to understand Runeterra in order to hasten its ruin.

Trivia[]

  • Vel'Koz's lore is the first to be told in first person.
  • Vel'Koz's purpose is to gain knowledge knowledge on Runeterra. Through disintegration disintegration.
  • Vel'Koz's eyes can be removed from his body (the largest can even fly, as seen when he dies)
  • Eyeballing similarities between Vel'Koz and the Frozen Watchers lead credence to the idea they might be related.
    • The specifics are uncertain, but they imply the veil between Runeterra and the Void shattering in the Freljord and members of Vel'Koz's Voidborn species crossing into the frozen realm.
      • Adaptation (seeing as the Voidborn that Diana Diana fought turned purple from pale after being exposed to Runeterra's atmosphere) was the key to their evolution, and the need for Iceborn 'subjects' and a subsequent 'empire' to conduct mass research on the world they landed in (much like Vel'Koz is doing at present).
  • According to his recently updated lore, Vel'Koz may be the oldest surviving Voidborn, whose ancient Shuriman name Vel'Koz roughly means "to understand by unmaking" in modern Shuriman.
