Summary[]

Shore

In the harsh lands of the Freljord, a young Notai boy named Nunu Nunu trudges through a ferocious blizzard in search of his best friend, a yeti named Willump Willump. He finds him collapsed in the snow and tries to help his friend up, but the ice witch Lissandra Lissandra appears before them. Three days ago, Nunu wakes up in a cave, having dreamt about his long-lost mother, Layka. Guided by half-forgotten dreams, Nunu and Willump search for the Heart of the Blue, a mysterious artifact said to reside in the Winged Mountain, which is the key to finding Layka. As they make their way towards the Winged Mountain, the duo gets attacked by a pack of ice wolves. While they manage to repel the pack, Nunu notes that they were covered in an odd purple ice. They eventually find themselves in a cave filled with True Ice, the strongest substance in the Freljord, with a statue of Anivia Anivia at the center. However, the statue is partially covered in Dark Ice, True Ice that has been corrupted by the Void. They manage to purify it by letting light into the chamber, unlocking a passage, and the two venture forth.

After some more traveling, the two set up camp for the night. Nunu plays a song he has been working on, and the two dance. Nights like these remind him of the time he spent with his mom. When he goes to sleep, Nunu has a dream about time she told him about the Heart of Blue. Unbeknownst to him, a dark figure observes them in the distance. Layka explains that it is a weapon of sorts, like a campfire, it battles the dark and the cold with warmth and light. As he continues to dream, he remembers the night their caravan was attacked, the night they got separated. He tries to chase after her, but can only hear her telling him to find the Heart of the Blue.

Meanwhile, at the Frostguard Citadel, Lissandra awakes from peering into Nunu's dreams. She learns that he is searching for something called the Heart of Blue and is certain it is connected to the yetis' greatest ability: the power to create True Ice. She is seeking True Ice to fortify the walls she built millennia ago, the one she used to seal away her oldest enemy, the Void. If the ice were to ever thaw, the Void would unleash untold horrors upon Runeterra.

Plains

When Nunu wakes, he finds himself surrounded by a pack of ice wolves and Willump missing. Willump quickly finds Nunu and tells him that he was sleepwalking. As more wolves arrive, the two are saved by Braum Braum, a hero of the Freljord. They tell him about their quest to find the Heart of the Blue, and while he has never heard of it, he shows them the way to the Winged Mountain. When they arrive at the base of the mountain, they see it being ravaged by a great blizzard. Braum suggests they make hero stew, one of his mother's recipes, while they think of a way to pass through the storm. Braum goes off to gather the ingredients and tasks Nunu & Willump to find a cauldron.

As they search for a cauldron, they come across an abandoned Notai camp. While exploring the camp, they find a giant spade embedded in the ground. When they examine it, the spade teleports them into a cave. The duo ventures further into the cave, drawn to the sound of hammering, and soon realizes they are in Hearth-Home, the home of Ornn Ornn, the Forge God. They try to get the Forge God's attention, but he isn't fond of visitors. Nunu quickly wins him over by praising his craftsmanship, while Ornn recognizes the spark of Anivia, his sister, within the boy. They ask him for one of his cauldrons, but Ornn refuses, instead, he offers to make them one. After restarting his forge, Ornn sends Nunu & Willump to gather the components for the cauldrom: a Jurlberry fruit, known only to grow inside strongholds, and an offerring from the Kellurel, a creature that resides in the Ice Garden.

They use the spade to return to the outside and head into an abandoned stronghold to search for a Jurlberry. As they traverse the stronghold, they learn that it was once a fortress built during the War of the Three Sisters centuries ago. As they approach the Jurlberry, they are attacked by elementals, but Willump channels his power and freezes them. After collecting the Jurlberry, they enter the Ice Garden, a maze of True Ice animals, to find the Kellurel, a giant deer made of True Ice that reigns over the Ice Garden. They gain an offering from the Kellurel, a tear, after they fix its legs.

The two return to Ornn's forge and give him the tear and the Jurlberry. The Forge God promptly eats the fruit and notes that the Kellurel sensed the same thing he did, as he begins work on their cauldron. After finishing the cauldron, Ornn asks the two to leave but leaves them with the parting: even when things seem dark, all you need is the smallest spark to light the way. They return to Braum and set up camp for the night, dining on his stew. Nunu recounts their adventure in the stronghold, noting they found some scary things about the Void within. He asks Braum if he knows anything about it, and while he doesn't know much, he does recall that the yetis fought alongside the Three Sisters to seal away the Void but paid a terrible price, something Willump is secretive about.

When he falls asleep, Nunu has another dream about his mom. He asks her if they are on the right track, but Layka tells him to have patience. Lissandra begins to puppet Layka and uses her to inquire more about the Heart of the Blue. Nunu begins to suspect something is wrong, so Lissandra releases her control. She leaves his dream and notes they are getting closer to the Freljord's darkest secret, one that brings Willump great pain.

Chasm

When Nunu wakes, Braum and Willump catch him sleepwalking towards the Winged Mountain. They see his eyes glowing, and the blizzard dissipates. As the trio walks across an ice bridge to the mountain, they are ambushed by ice wolves. Braum tells them to run, while he holds them off but gets knocked off by a claw made of Dark Ice. Nunu & Willump press forward as Lissandra arrives and comments that Willump shall wield the Heart of the Blue for her, no matter the cost.

When they enter a nearby cave, they discover a battlefield with the corpse of an Ursine, followers of the Volibear who abandoned their humanity for the power to transform into bear-like monsters. They soon come across a giant horn, which Nunu decides to blow; it then awakens Volibear Volibear from his slumber, and he gives chase to the two interlopers. Nunu & Willump evade capture when Volibear falls into a giant pit, but the Storm Bear is relentless. They manage to subdue Volibear by detonating some blastcones and dropping some boulders over his head. Amused by their antics, Volibear deduces they are children of Anivia from their scent. He gives them a chance to demonstrate their strength, and if he is impressed, he'll consider letting them live. Nunu lets out a feeble roar, hoping it will one day equal Volibear's, but Volibear tells him he won't roar like him; instead, he must find his own sound. Volibear decides to return to his slumber, to gather his strength for the battle to come, but before he leaves, Nunu asks if he knows how to get to the Winged Mountain. Volibear replies they are already at Ramshara and lifts a boulder, revealing a passage. Volibear promises they will one day meet again, on the eve of battle, and if he hasn't found what he is searching for by then, he will kill them both himself.

Ramshara

As they approach Ramshara, they find a giant structure in the shape of a yeti and look for a way inside. Nunu can tell Willump is familiar with this location, but his friend remains secretive. They soon come across several frozen yetis fighting each other. These wild yetis differ greatly from Willump, having lost their magic, playful nature, and two of their four arms. Looking at what became of his kin greatly upsets Willump as he wanders deeper into Ramshara. Nunu tries to console his friend with a saying from his mother: "Sorrow is like an ice wolf; however much it howls, be careful not to feed it." Feeling better, Willump reveals that Ramshara is the home of all yetis. The two relight Ramshara by playing a song in front of a statue of Anivia, creating a slide across the city. The slide leads them to a large structure that Willump says houses the yetis' treasures. Believing it to be where the Heart of the Blue resides, the two look for a way to enter.

They open the entrance to the building after playing three large yeti drums. Inside, they find murals of yeti history. Willump explains that all yetis were once feral, but one day Anivia saw a stronger yeti showing kindness to a weaker one and granted them her blessing, giving all yetis their two additional arms and the power to create True Ice. Nunu realizes the Heart of the Blue is a piece of Anivia's heart and it was in the yetis' possession. They then see another mural depicting the yetis meeting the Three Sisters and how they convinced them to fight beside them against the Void. However, Lissandra betrayed the yetis, draining them of their magic to erect her True Ice wall. Afterwards, she sacrificed the rest of their army, including her sisters, to win the war. Willump finally reveals that he was the one who painted these murals as the sole survivor of Lissandra's treachery. When they reach the final chamber, the Heart of the Blue is no where to be found. Willump explains that someone left with it, but is reluctant to share more. Nunu implores him to tell him, but before he can, Willump notices a yeti echo at the corner of the chamber and follows it.

Nunu chases Willump into a chamber filled with Dark Ice and a giant yeti statue at the center. He sees the spirits bewitching Willump and goes to save him. He plays a song on his flute and wakes Willump from his trance, allowing him to banish the spirits with his magic. After setting up camp for the night, Willump reveals that he was the guardian of the Heart of the Blue. Nunu tries to press him for its location, but he cryptically replies it is where it belongs and goes to sleep.

Nunu dreams once more about his mother, but Lissandra is still controlling Layka. Layka asks for progress on his quest, and Nunu shares that they are in Ramshara. He tells her about how the yetis gained their power of True Ice from a gem. When she asks for its location, he tells that Willump took it. Lissandra releases Layka, and she tells him that he is so close to finding the Heart of the Blue. Meanwhile, Lissandra arrives in Ramshara and reminisces about her sisters when she sees their mural. Like so long ago, she knows a sacrifice will be needed to gain the power of the True Ice. When she approaches their campsite, Willump is alerted to her presence.

When Nunu wakes up, he finds Willump missing and goes to look for him, taking us back to the present day. Lissandra tells him to leave Willump, as he is her ultimate weapon in the coming conflict with the Void. Nunu doesn't understand what Lissandra means, so she asks if he is willing to sacrifice one life to save the world. Nunu is hesitant to agree, because Willump is his best friend, but Lissandra retorts that she sacrificed her own family for the greater good. She gives him a final warning to surrender Willump, but he remains defiant. As a result, Lissandra blasts him with Dark Ice and departs with the yeti. As he lies in the snow, Nunu begins to give up, but the voice of Layka urges him forward. She tells him to keep his friends in his heart, and in his mind, it will give him power. As he begins to pass out, Braum arrives and helps him up. Braum tells Nunu he was originally lost in Ramshara until a warm feeling guided him toward the boy. The two are soon interrupted by an avalanche and sled down the hill on Braum's shield.

The two then brainstorm ideas on how to save Willump. Braum wishes they had more stew to help them think, reminding Nunu of his encounter with the Kellurel. He summons it by playing a song, and they ride on its back towards the Frostguard Citadel. Nunu asks Braum about Lissandra's question, if he would sacrifice one person to save the world. While Braum admits this question is too complex for him, he notes that there are never just two choices, as there is always a secret third option.

Citadel

When they reach the citadel, Braum volunteers to distract the guards while Nunu finds Willump. After sneaking his way past numerous frostguards, Nunu makes his way to Willump's cage and frees him. As soon as the two are reunited, frostguards enter the dungeon and the two make their escape by sledding down the icy terrain. They try to make their way across a bridge, but the path is blocked by the frostguards. Willump has an idea and begins to channel his magic, rolling it into a giant snowball and mowing down the soldiers in their way. After clearing the way, the two are knocked off the bridge by shards of Dark Ice.

They now find themselves at a lower, more rundown, bridge and begin to look around. Lissandra taunts Nunu for throwing away the world in the name of a pointless friendship, but Nunu stands by Willump. While he understands why Lissandra made the choices she did, he can't imagine going forward without his family beside him. Lissandra confronts them about this supposed third choice, and while Nunu admits he doesn't know what it is yet, they just have to look hard enough to see it. However, the only thing Lissandra sees is their doom and attacks. As Nunu & Willump begin to gain the upper hand, Lissandra unleashes a nova of Dark Ice, but Willump counters it with his True Ice. However, the Ice Witch is not defeated so easily, with her patience growing thin, she uses her magic corrupt Willump and turns him against Nunu.

Willump tries to resist the corruption but still ends up hurting Nunu. Nunu tries to reach him, but no avail. Feeling defeated, the spirit of Layka comes to Nunu. He laments no being able to save Willump or finding the Heart of the Blue, but she tells him he already found it. Layka tells him that he needed to be some place dark before he could find the light, revealing that Willump already gave him the Heart of the Blue. He fears that he will lose her forever if he reaches the Heart of the Blue, but she tells him she will live on as long as he continues to tell her story and sing their songs. He approaches Lissandra and infuses her pedestal with magic, restoring her sight. Exhausted, Willump catches him, also cleansed of his corruption. Braum soon arrives and they decide to leave before Lissandra can gather her bearings.

Once outside, Braum tells them they must now part. While they make an excellent trio, they have their own path to go, however, he is excited to hear about their stories the next time they meet. Willump apologizes for hiding the truth about the Heart of the Blue, explaining he didn't want Lissandra to find it. Nunu worries he is not worthy to wield the Heart of the Blue, but Willump reassures him. Willump suggests he try out his new powers and uses it to repair his flute, which broke during their fight with Lissandra. They then slide off towards their next adventure.

In the aftermath of the battle, the magic that healed Lissandra's eyes has worn off. She begins to contemplate and realizes she is not the savior of the Freljord, rather, Nunu is. However, he is not yet ready for the battle to come and she must keep an eye on him, to sharpen him into a weapon that can defeat the Void.
