Crest of the Sentinels of Light

The Sentinels of Light are an ancient sacred order that could traced back its origins to the Blessed Isles Crest icon Blessed Isles, where the Black Mist originated. Currently a group of individuals that defend Runeterra from the undying spirits of the Shadow Isles Crest icon Shadow Isles. Known places defended by the Sentinels include Bilgewater Crest icon Bilgewater, Demacia Crest icon Demacia, Holdrum, Holnek, Ionia Crest icon Ionia, and the Serpentine Delta. The Sentinels have established multiple strongholds across Runeterra in order to defend each region from harrowings.

Each hunter of the order is given a relic-stone weapon as their main weapon for hunting. A Sentinel uses the weapon, by channeling their souls into light. Lucian's pistols were originally wielded by his father Urias and by Senna. Senna now wields a relic canon made out of various relic-stones from deceased Sentinels.

While inside Thresh's Thresh's lantern, Senna freed some Sentinels' souls, who possessed lost knowledge of the Ruination's origins, and of her curse. Now, their goal is to find the Ruined King Ruined King and stop him at any cost.

When the Ruined King made his return to the world of Runeterra and unleashed harrowings, multiple new Sentinels were recruited to fight back against the darkness. Lucian, Senna, and their team of Sentinels raced across Runeterra find to the fetters of Queen Isolde Isolde's soul before Viego and repel his attacks.

Rise of the Sentinels

Demacia Crest icon Demacia

Lucian Lucian and Senna Senna sail to Sentinel Headquarters in search of reinforcements. There they encounter a lone Sentinel rookie before being attacked by wraiths. The Sentinels then discover a mysterious girl, Gwen Gwen, fighting off wraiths with a pair of oversized scissors. When more wraiths appear, she hides everyone within her hallowed mist, allowing them to make a mad dash to headquarters. Inside, the Sentinels discover the Worldstone and the Wayfinder, which allows them to travel to any Sentinel base, and head out to fight the Black Mist in Demacia.

Once they arrive at Demacia, the Sentinels head to the Singing Swan tavern and meet Vayne Vayne, who informs them the harrowing is concentrated around the Mageseeker compound. With dawning knowledge that Viego Viego is seeking a powerful artifact, they head out to face the Ruined King. A ruined Shyvana Shyvana confronts them at the entrance of the compound, before burying them in rubble. Gwen frees the group with her scissors and they charge into the Mageseeker's vaults.

Viego confronts the Sentinels within the vaults and opens a sealed chest to retrieve a handheld mirror, revealed to be a fragment of Queen Isolde Isolde's soul. He attempts to wrest the remaining fragment within Senna before Gwen intervenes and hides her within the hallowed mist. Viego then vanishes, but not before collapsing the building atop the Sentinels. The Sentinels manage to escape and give chase to Viego.

They eventually corner him, but before Senna can harm him, Shyvana Shyvana attacks. At Vayne's provocation, Shyvana transforms, and the group must fight a ruined dragon. Viego escapes with the mirror while the Sentinels subdue Shyvana. Senna stops Vayne from killing her and they agree to imprison her within the Mageseeker's dungeon until she returns to normal. Vayne agrees to join the Sentinels, in exchange for relic weapons, and they return to headquarters to swear her in. Once sworn in, Gwen provides her a new uniform and Vayne Vayne outfits herself with a new relic crossbow.

Freljord Crest icon Freljord

The Sentinels teleport to the Freljord base, only to be trapped beneath decades of snowpack. Digging their way out of a snowdrift, the Sentinels discover a giant, axe-wielding berserker chasing battling some wraiths. Lucian Lucian recognizes Olaf Olaf and they follow him as he hacks his way through the snowdrift and chases after a wraith. The wraith leads him to Vex and Olaf attacks her, but she easily repels him. The Sentinels intervene before she can finish him off and she leaves with her shadow. Olaf is displeased with their interference in his glorious warrior's death and demands a fight.

The Rookie has a close call with Olaf's blade but eventually manages to placate him. Olaf agrees to team up with the Sentinels to fight the shadowy figure. The group then sets off through the ice caves in search of its foe. After several hours, the Sentinels reach the top of a glacier and encounter Vex unearthing an artifact from the ice. The Sentinels confront her, but make little headway against her shadow. Olaf, pacified by the Rookie, can't enter his berserk state to help the group. The Sentinels manage to enrage Olaf again and direct his fury against Vex. Nonetheless, the shadowy yordle secures the artifact, an ivory comb, and escapes.

The Sentinels chase Vex down the glacier and cause an avalanche to cut off her escape. As they corner her, she slows them down with a cloud of despair and disappears. Lucian suggests recruiting Olaf, which Senna reluctantly agrees, and they convince him to join in promise of facing Viego Viego, someone who could grant him his glorious death, and they return to headquarters. Senna swears him into their ranks and Olaf Olaf is provided a new uniform and relic axes.

Noxus Crest icon Noxus

In Noxus, the Sentinels discover that their base has been paved over by the Reckoner's Arena, where gladiators are fighting wraiths. Draven Draven presides over the ruined crowd and, after spotting the Sentinels, decides to make them his next combatants and unleashes a horde of wraiths against them. Though the Sentinels triumph, they're imprisoned with Riven Riven for the next arena fight. Fortunately, she devised an escape plan that requires the Rookie's silver tongue to execute.

Once free, Riven and the Sentinels follow the Black Mist to the Immortal Bastion. Wraiths reveal a concealed entrance to the city's catacombs, and Senna, Riven, and the Rookie descend in search of the secrets the Mist seeks out. They eventually arrive at the Black Rose's chamber and enter after the Rookie shares one of their darkest secrets. Inside the chamber, Senna, Riven and Rookie confront Viego. He has found another fetter, a flagon of wine, and taunts Senna about the one she still possesses. Before they can stop him, Viego vanishes, and Draven Draven demands the three finish their fight.

Draven forces Senna, Riven, and the Rookie to return to the arena and battle him, revealing that he has recaptured their allies. After a struggle, the three exploit Draven's crowd pandering and gain the upper hand. They leave him hogtied in the arena and reunite with the rest of their party. As the Sentinels prepare to depart, they notice Riven sitting alone and offers to let her to join them with the promise of give her a new home. They return to headquarters where Riven Riven is sworn in and given a new relic sword and uniform.

Ionia Crest icon Ionia

In Ionia, the Sentinels are met by the ruined landscape of the first lands and attacked by the corrupted environment. After fighting off the Mist, the Sentinels are confronted by Irelia Irelia, who mistakes them for enemies. While Irelia initially refuses to believe any group containing Riven Riven can mean well for Ionia, she agrees to take them to Karma Karma and the Lasting Altar.

At the Altar, Riven and Olaf Olaf remain outside, due her history in Ionia and him farting. Karma reveals that Viego is coming for another fetter, a silver flower. She charges the Sentinels with taking the fetter to the Grove of the Ancients, a Vastayan forest protected by ancient magics that not even the Black Mist could penetrate. Before they can leave, wraiths invade the Altar and the Sentinels and Irelia hold them off while Karma flees to the grove.

The Sentinels approach the forest, but Karma is overwhelmed with regret of not intervening while Ionians died. Giving in to Viego's corruption, persuaded by his determination, she becomes ruined ruined and flees further into the forest with the fetter. The Sentinels manage to temporarily purify Karma. Before transforming back, she explains each fetter is part of Isolde and Viego is determined to combine them to bring back his lost love. As more wraiths arrive, the Sentinels have to abandon Karma and flee into the Grove.

Inside the Grove, the Spirit of Ionia and the Grove's magic shield the Sentinels from their foes. In the lull, Senna and the Sentinels ponder her connection with Isolde. Then Viego himself arrives, corrupting the land and stealing the fetter. Seeing Viego corrupt Ionia convinces Irelia to join the Sentinels and she returns with them to headquarters. She is then sworn in and given a new uniform uniform and armed with new relic blades.

Targon Crest icon Targon

In Targon, the Sentinels see the mountain's peak has been shrouded in Black Mist. The Sentinels, determined to make the perilous climb, encounter Diana Diana at the base of the mountain, who volunteers to guide them on their climb. Halfway up, Diana suggests retreat when she hears the Aspects locked in a celestial clash. The Rookie convinces her that protecting Targon is worth risking the Aspects' wrath, but before they can continue they encounter Solari.

Cutting down the Solari and continuing the climb, the group finds Atreus Atreus and Viego Viego vying for another fetter. Before they can assist, Viego ruins his opponent, reawakening Pantheon Pantheon. The newly restored Aspect of War then calls down an avalanche. Sheltering from Pantheon's avalanche in a cave, the group is trapped by falling rocks. Diana despairs and nearly succumbs to ruin, but the group meet two Lunari, whose faith restores her will to fight. Reinvigorated, Diana clears the rockfall and they head back up the mountain.

At the peak, cosmic light repels plumes of Black Mist. In the chaos, Viego retrieves another fetter, a copper sundial. As the Sentinels prepare to confront him with the Aspect of the Moon, Viego induces his own Aspect to dispatch the group and departs. Pantheon knocks them to lower a plateau and summons a wraith army to his aid. After overcoming his army, Diana defeats Pantheon and sends him plummeting beneath mountain. Seeing no hope for her people while the Harrowing persists, Diana Diana agrees to join the Sentinels. She returns to headquarters to be sworn in and is given a new uniform and a relic sword.

Piltover Crest icon Piltover & Zaun Crest icon Zaun

As the group prepares to depart for their next destination, a couple of Sentinels take the Rookie aside. Concerned with their lack of combat experience, they spend the night sparring. In Piltover, the Sentinels discover that the city is oddly unaffected the Black Mist. They quickly run into Graves Graves, who informs them that Piltover has hextech contraptions that blow away the Mist. However, the machines shortly break and the Black Mist pours in. They track the Mist to a curio shop, where Senna identifies an antique parasol as a fetter. Before the Sentinels can secure it, Graves steals the parasol with the intent of selling it.

Following a trail of Black Mist, the Sentinels discover that Graves has fled to the undercity of Zaun. Unfortunately the entrance to Zaun has been blocked by barricades and chem-tech mines. The group soon meets two local Sentinels, Ada and Dess, who suggest entering the undercity through the connected sewer system. Once they arrive in Zaun, they encounter Vex, who is also searching for Graves' fetter. Ada and Dess volunteer to hold off Vex, while the rest of the team searches for Graves.

The Sentinels eventually track him down to a chemtech factory, and Senna sends in the Rookie to negotiate. Vayne and Senna soon join the negotiations, but when Graves refuses to hand over the fetter, Vayne shoots at him, and he returns fire. The Sentinels are quickly surrounded by volatile chemicals, while Graves keeps firing. The fire fight soon causes the chemicals to ignite and detonate. They all escape just as the building blows, but stumble into Vex, who defeated Ada and Dess and takes the fetter. Lucian sees value in a fearless gunman who's furious at Viego and recruits Graves, despite protest from Senna. They return to headquarters where Graves Graves outfits himself with a new relic shotgun and uniform. Despite initial objections, Graves eventually takes the Sentinels oath after being intimidated by Vayne.

Ixtal Crest icon Ixtal

Arriving in Ixtal, the Sentinels must split up to find traces of the Harrowing. Frustrated by Lucian's growing concern, Senna sends him and the Rookie off to scout east while the others head in different directions. Lucian and the Rookie soon encounter Rengar Rengar, who expresses interest in the challenge of hunting wraiths. Unfortunately, he is swarmed, and Lucian and the Rookie must try to help.

Defeated by the wraiths, Rengar loses his confidence and refuses to fight. The Rookie spins a fanciful tale and, despite Lucian's amusement and disbelief, manages to reinspire Rengar. With their new ally roused, the trio pushes on after the Mist. Lucian vents to Rengar and the Rookie about his desire to protect Senna. Thresh Thresh appears and offers a deal to the Sentinels: crucial information that can defeat Viego, in exchange for a fetter. Despite their bitter history, Lucian follows him to a temple to hear him out.

Thresh exploits Lucian's desire to protect Senna and he reluctantly retrieves a jade mask from the temple. Thresh reveals ancient reliefs within the temple that tell the story of an old Harrowing. The reliefs reveals there is a powerful weapon at the Sentinel base in Shurima, a gun that can revive fallen allies. Not believing the story, Lucian calls off the deal, but Thresh has already departed. Furious that he's been had, Lucian swears Rengar and the Rookie to secrecy. The Rookie convinces Lucian to let Rengar join them, due to his new desire to hunt Thresh and Viego. They return to headquarters where they swear in Rengar Rengar and outfit him with a new uniform and relic knives.

Bilgewater Crest icon Bilgewater

In Bilgewater, the Sentinels meet up with Miss Fortune Miss Fortune, who has recently recovered a fetter, a brass bell. When the Sentinels explain the object's value, she leaves to make a deal with Viego, and the team pursues her. Senna tries to talk her out of the deal, but Fortune insists her power struggle with Gangplank Gangplank is too important. The rest of the Sentinels persuade her to join with them, and to give them the fetter if they can defeat Viego. Still, no one trusts her.

On their way to the slaughter docks, the group comes upon Pyke Pyke fighting a group of wraiths. After a tense misunderstanding, Senna convinces him to fight the wraiths barring their path, allowing them to keep tracking Viego. The Sentinels soon find him in a warehouse, searching for the fetter. After confronting him, Miss Fortune Miss Fortune betrays the group and offers Viego the fetter and the Sentinels in exchange for the power to destroy her rivals. Senna proceeds to attack Viego and Fortune returns fire. In the ensuing fight, the Rookie informs Pyke that Miss Fortune is now on his list and he disappears. Viego departs with the fetter, but not before collapsing the warehouse, which knocks the Wayfinder into the ocean.

Dispirited at the loss of their only transportation, the Sentinels' day gets worse when Miss Fortune and her crew shows up to finish them off. At the last moment, Pyke returns and drags Fortune in to the bay while the Sentinels engage her gang. After hours of fighting, the Sentinels manage defeat Fortune's crew, but are pressed to exhaustion. Pyke then resurfaces and returns the Wayfinder to the Sentinels before parting ways. The group returns to headquarters only to find out that Pyke has stowed away. Lucian decides to swear him in to their ranks, despite objections from Senna, and Pyke Pyke is outfitted with a new uniform and a relic knife.

Sentinel Outposts

After the Ruination of the Blessed Isles Crest icon Blessed Isles, the Sentinels set up multiple strongholds across Runeterra to stand as beacons of light and hope against the growing threat of darkness. Inside them include caches of stone weapons and stone tablets that allow Sentinels to communicate with other bases. There is also the Worldstone, an enchanted map that allows the Sentinels to track the Black Mist across Runeterra and teleport between Sentinel bases. However, most Sentinel bases have been destroyed or deteriorated after years of neglect.

  • Sentinel Headquarters: Main outpost of the order. Located on a secluded island thousands of leagues away from nearest point of Demacia in Valoran, it was previously attacked by the black mist, with only one rookie survivor remaining when Lucian Lucian and Senna Senna came back.
    • Map Room: Located in the Sentinel headquarters, the map room is used as the main strategic coordination center of the order. The Worldstone is located in the center of the room.
    • Sanctum of Lost Light: A room located inside the main sentinel headquarters, it contains weapon relics and other artifacts of deceased sentinels. Senna Senna frequently visited this place to ponder about mortality and her duty as a sentinel.

Culture

Clothing

Most sentinels follow a specific dress code, white and black cloth with gold trimmings and geometric accessories, including the crest of the Sentinels. Akshan Akshan is mentioned to have broken several dress codes of the order with his preferred choice of garments.

Gwen Gwen is the tailor for the new generation of Sentinels and styles their hair.[1]

Tapestry

Every deceased Sentinel gets a long tapestry, made from threads and magic, depicting their their final moments. Lenasha had one such tapestry showing her with her relic shield defending the living from an onslaught of wraiths before she died. Similarly, Senna Senna had her own tapestry, with arms crossed over her chest and with her eyes glowing with an eerie green light. It is unclear to what extent the tapestries are enchanted, with Senna believing hers changed after she came back as an undead.

Weapons

The weapons of the Sentinels are made from stones of the Blessed Isles, holding the arcane power of light. These weapons aren't activated by force or trigger but by the sheer force of righteous will of the user, channeling the light of their soul to push back the darkness. The relic weapons of the Sentinels are the only known defense against the Black Mist and its creatures of darkness.

Most famous among the relic weapons are the twin pistols wielded by Lucian Lucian. They were carved from the same stone and have been passed down through generations of Sentinels. They once belonged to Senna Senna and Lucian's father Urias before he took up the weapons in their honor.[2] Other notable Sentinel relics include Senna's relic cannon and Akshan's Akshan's Absolver. Senna's cannon is made from the weapons of fallen Sentinels. While imprisoned in Thresh's Thresh's lantern, Senna freed the souls of her fellow Sentinels and collected their stones to create her cannon. The Absolver once belonged to Sentinel Shadya and has the power to revive anyone who was recently killed by it's target, if it kills them. It has since been modified and is in the possession of Akshan upon Shadya's murder.

  • Wayfinders: Used by Sentinels to instantly teleport them and a small group back to the Sentinel Headquarters. They are often designed to resemble relic weapons. Only Sentinels bound to their Wayfinders can use them.

Worldstone

Located in the map room of the Sentinel Headquarters, the worldstone is a large enchanted stone tablet depicting a relief of several continents, archipelagos, and islands of the northern hemisphere of Runeterra. It is able to turn from white to black in areas where the black mist is attacking. Its other uses are for instant communication between order members across Runeterra, creating light projections of calling order members, as well as instant fast-travel to any sentinel outpost shown on the map.

Sentinels of Light Glass Mural

Each and every Sentinel candidate before joining the order must recite the Oath amongst several witnesses as well as abide by the oath until they leave the order or by their permanent death.

"I swear by the light of the ancients...

I will not run from darkness.
I will light the way with a steadfast heart,
And face each shadow with a ready weapon
As a beacon, a warrior, a Sentinel,
I defense myself, my fellows, and my world.
May we stand together in the light, or fall in darkness.
Fight bravely and remember your oath."[3]
