The Iron Revenant[]

The first known instance of the birth of an undead was with the warlord Sahn-Uzal Sahn-Uzal. After dying and ending up in the afterlife, he was angered to see it was nothing like the stories. In anger, he waited for the day he would return to the pyhiscal realm. And sure enough, the day came when a coven of sorcerers resolved to bring Sahn-Uzal back from the dead. Lacking any flesh or bone, he spurred them to make him stronger than any mortal, binding his spirit-form in dark metal plates wrought in the likeness of his old Indestructible armor. So he rose, Realm of Death a hulking revenant of iron and hate.

After a long reign he would finally be betrayed by his closest advisor closest advisor and Solid Rose Clasic Faction Colors her followers. This hidden cabal managed to sever the anchors of his soul from his armor, and sealed the empty iron shell away in a secret place. And so, Mordekaiser Mordekaiser was cast out of the material realm. However, unbeknownst to anyone, he had planned for this—indeed, it was a pivotal part of his design. Domination and deceit had carried him far, but he knew that a destiny far grander than the Hall of Bones awaited him.

There, in the once empty wasteland of the afterlife, all those who had died under his latest reign were waiting. Perverted by dark sorcery, their spirits would never fade. The strongest became his devout, eternal army, bound to his will... but even the weak were given purpose. From the subtle matter of their souls, Mordekaiser would forge a new empire. They would be the building blocks and mortar of his Afterworld.

Noxian Necromancy[]

At the beginning of the first Demacian-Noxian War, Sion Sion died after killing the first king of Demacia Crest icon Demacia. Half a century passed before Sion Sion's tomb was reopened. Noxian dominance had waned in the years since Sion’s death, and the ruling Grand General of the empire, Boram Darkwill Boram Darkwill, was willing to pay almost any price to restore its lost glory. The Solid Rose Clasic Faction Colors Black Rose, equipped with the knowledge of blood magic they learned under Mordekaiser Mordekaiser's rule, reanimated the long-dead hero, and presented him to the Darkwill.

He hurled himself like a living battering ram against the enemies of Noxus, destroying all he faced. More so than before his death, the victories Sion Sion brought were costly. He was uncontrollable, killing friend and foe without remorse, and those forced to fight alongside him began to desert. Finally, Darkwill ordered Sion Sion reinterred. Without slaughter, the blood magic that sustained him quickly engulfed his mind in an all-consuming rage. His roars finally fell silent as he was sealed in beneath his giant statue.

When his tomb opened once more, it was to a very different empire. Darkwill was gone, overthrown by the general Jericho Swain Jericho Swain, —but Sion Sion cared little, roaring and pulling against his bindings in a frenzy that could only be sated in battle.

The Sea of Bilgewater[]

The Black Mist was however not the only thing taking lives in the vicinity of the Shadow Isles Crest icon Shadow Isles. Underwater something was stirring. Fishermen who drowned in the seas near seas of the Serpent Isles sometimes came back to unlife. Both Nautilus Nautilus and Pyke Pyke were betrayed by their captain and drowned at sea, but both did not not stay dead.

As Nautilus Nautilus sank, the light above dimmed, and all grew quiet, the man's own breath the only sound echoing in the iron suit. Then something reached out from the depths. He was being pulled down, and for the first time Nautilus Nautilus felt liquid fear wrap itself around his heart.

When Nautilus Nautilus awoke on the ocean floor, he was something... different. The darkness could no longer hurt him. The great metal suit had become a seamless shell around him, concealing the bond that the primordial power had made with his spirit. Trapped in the sunless depths, he could remember only one thing—the new captain's broken promise. Nautilus vowed, there and then, that all would pay the ocean's tithe. He would see to it himself.

As Pyke Pyke set about his work inside the jaull-fish, a deep vibration began to stir in the creature’s cavernous gullet. Roiling bubbles broke the ocean’s surface, and an entire pod of jaulls began to push against the tethered ship’s hull. The captain lost his nerve, and cut Pyke Pyke's lifeline. The last thing the doomed harpooner saw before the beast’s jaws snapped shut was the look of horror on his crewmates’ faces, as they watched him being swallowed alive. But this was not the end for Pyke Pyke.

In the deepest fathoms of the unknowable ocean, crushed by the titanic pressure, and still firmly trapped within the jaull’s mouth, he opened his eyes once more. There were blue lights everywhere, thousands of them, seemingly watching him. Tremulous echoes of something ancient and mysterious filled his brain, crushing his mind, showing him visions of all he had lost whilst others grew fat. A new hunger overtook Pyke Pyke, one for vengeance and retribution. He would fill the depths with the corpses of those who had wronged him.

Rise of Shurima's Last Emperor[]

Thousand of years after the death of the last Shuriman Emperor, the blood of the Emperor's last descendant descendant spilled onto the temple ruins and resurrected him. Azir Azir was reborn, but was yet incomplete; his body little more than animate dust given form, held together by the last vestiges of his indomitable will. After resurrecting he took the wounded Sivir Sivir to the Oasis of the Dawn, where the waters could heal her fatal wound. And with that act of selflessness, Azir was lifted up in a column of fire as the magic of Shurima renewed him, remaking him as the Ascended being he was meant to become.

Necromancy[]

Because the warlord Sahn-Uzal Sahn-Uzal was resurrected with necromancy, it is clear that the art existed at least 400 BN. However there are also signs that necromancy was used as far back as the times of Ancient Shurima Crest icon Shurima (2500 BN), seeing that the Chalicar Chalicar can seemingly raise someone from the dead with the use of blood from someone of the same lineage as a conduit. Although the practice of necromancy jealously guarded by its practioners, some of the stories about necromancy, mainly Sion Sion's and Azir Azir's, would suggest one way of achieving an undead form is by the use of blood magic.

Every region has its own different view on the use of necromancy

Bilgewater Crest icon Bilgewater

  • There have been instances of people returning as Undead by mysterious means after drowning in the depths of the Gaurdian's Sea between Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles such as Nautilus Nautilus and Pyke Pyke. These are beings that are often culturally significant, oft-storied, and are feared by the people of the region.

Demacia Crest icon Demacia

  • Demacia has a strong opposing stance against the undead of the Shadow Isles, sending troops to defend their and neighbouring lands from the Harrowing.

Ionia Crest icon Ionia

  • While Ionians speak with their dead during the Spirit Blossom Festival, it would be mostly the Serrated Dirk item Navori Brotherhood that use necromancy as a military asset.[1]

Noxus Crest icon Noxus

  • Only the Solid Rose Clasic Faction Colors Black Rose has been known to use necromancy, but Noxus Crest icon Noxus itself have been using the Undead, specifically Sion Sion, in combat.

Shadow Isles Crest icon Shadow Isles

  • These secluded isles were destroyed by the Ruination, a twisted amplified version of necromancy enacted by the Ruined King, while the Black Mist that surrounds the Isles represents its ancient curse.
  • Blessed Isles Crest icon Blessed Isles: The civilization that once boomed on the Isles had a negative view about necromancy, refusing to help anyone who asked to bring back the dead. Death, they insisted, was final. To cheat it would be to break the natural order of the world.
