Runeterra is home to many denizens. Most of those are humans, but there are other races as well.

Main Sapient Races
  • Draven OriginalSquare Humans: They are the dominant sapient life forms of the world. They have a great variety of appearances, strengths and magical power,etc.
    • Iceborn Keeper profileicon Iceborn Humans: An sub-type of magically altered humans. Ancient humans from the Freljord were granted near immortality, incredible power, icy forms, and resistance to low temperatures by the Watchers of the Void, in return for the Iceborn's servitude. They served the Watchers for a time before they rebelled, seeking their freedom from their masters in a mighty war which they won. Besides Lissandra OriginalSquare Lissandra, iceborn descendants continued to exist in the Freljord such as Ashe OriginalSquare Ashe and Sejuani OriginalSquare Sejuani though they no longer have immortality. They are among a few beings able to touch and use True Ice.
    • Fireborn Humans: They are the Iceborn/Stormborn equivalent, born with fire powers. Hearthblood are the people who once lived around Hearth-home, paragons of Ornn OriginalSquare Ornn and his ideals, The Lost Tales of Ornn implies they were Fireborn.
    • Stormborn Humans: Despite being mentioned, it has never been stated what they truly are.
  • Nasus OriginalSquare Ascended: The term ascended refers to all beings, currently only humans, who were magically altered by celestial magic, some of which greatly altered their physical appearances from their original human ones. There are several types of ascended such as:
    • Shurima The Spurned Baccai: Those who survived a failed ascension ritual are known as the baccai, who became physically twisted and malformed as a result. Xerath OriginalSquare Xerath is a unique aberration of Baccai.
    • Darkin Rhaast profileicon Darkin: Are corrupted ascended formed after the Fall of Shurima. They were later sealed away in weapon prisons. They take form of demon-like, winged humanoids. They are shown to wield tremendous powers over physical and mental psyches of mortals, as demonstrated by Aatrox OriginalSquare Aatrox. Only five remain in existence, with only three of those five still known to history in some way.
    • Azir OriginalSquare Shuriman Ascended: An order of intelligent anthropomorphic beings of exceptional power, originating from and dedicated to the defense of Shurima, an ancient empire over three thousand years dead. The ascended were once humans who underwent a transformative ritual that granted them near-immortality and demigod-like powers in order to safeguard their nation in its darkest hour. It is currently unknown how many of these Ascended ever came to be. Despite their small numbers and Shurima's collapse millennia ago, the Shuriman Ascended remain among the most powerful beings on Runeterra.
    • Zoe OriginalSquare Targonian Ascended: Usually melding of a human and Targon aspect, they retain their mostly human appearance after ascension. It is currently unknown how many of these Ascended ever came to be. Despite their small numbers, the Targonian ascended remain among the most powerful beings on Runeterra, and have shaped the course of events throughout the planets history.
  • Skarner OriginalSquare Brackern: An ancient, peaceful, and magical race of large, crystalline scorpions that inhabited the Shurima Desert. At birth, brackerns have no crystals covering their soft carapace, and will have to find a soulstone, a special crystal that contains the memories and emotions of its previous owner, and fuse with it, experiencing all that it contained and encasing the brackern's carapace in crystals. If one is not found soon, they will die within a few moments. During the Rune Wars, the brackern went into hibernation deep beneath the ground, waiting for the Rune Wars to end. The first of them, Skarner OriginalSquare Skarner, was awakened by the mental screams of his brethren as humans began to break the crystal carapace of his kind, resulting to many of their deaths.
  • Cosmic Genesis profileicon Celestials: A race of enigmatic beings wielding powers that are said to be godlike, Celestials are the universe's protectors and caretakers, seeding and influencing the tide of the world's past, present and future towards the greater good. Others interfere directly, as with the case of Soraka's crusade of healing and restoration, while others choose to contribute as a hidden hand, as is Bard's way to protect the multiverse from falling to destruction. Most of them are revered as powerful deities or guardians but they share the same mystery and bond with the heavenly firmaments. A few have been named and identified by the people of Runeterra as its patron: Soraka OriginalSquare Soraka and Bard OriginalSquare Bard.
    • Dusk and Dawn profileicon Aspects: The Aspects are stellar beings that live beyond the physical and spiritual realms of Runeterra, in the cosmic realm of Targon Prime. These beings embody concepts and celestial magics. They are able to meld with mortals, making them their hosts, or merely imbue them with stellar power. Through these mortals, they are able to traverse and/or interact with the mortal plane with relative efficiency. As originators of all the Targonian Ascended and the Shuriman Ascended, the Aspects have shaped the destiny of the world in ages past.
    • Aurelion Sol OriginalSquare Celestial Dragons: With abilities far beyond their terrestrial kin, celestial dragons are capable of shaping certain aspects of the universe like forging new stars. They have incredibly long lifespans and are seemingly immortal. Aurelion Sol OriginalSquare Aurelion Sol has forged stars since the dawn of time, and now unwillingly serves Mount Targon Crest icon Targon and its Aspects.
    • Eternals Promo 01 Eternals: The Runeterra universe has a whole pantheon of deities, whose influence shaped many of the religions, ideologies, and myths across all of the modern Runeterran cultures. While the truths of these deities have been lost to the ages, all are still preserved in the celestial realm, shining down on the world through constellations and archetypes.
  • DragonSquare Dragons: Dragons are winged, elemental-breathing reptiles that can reach near-giant sizes over their long, long lifespans, they are the indisputable ruler of the skies. Both fearsome and majestic, dragons have a society that revolves around strength and might and because of their egoistic and narcissistic pride, mixing their blood with that of races outside of dragonkind are seen as an abomination, a cancer that must be eradicated utterly. Many dragons persecute such defiled creations and their perpetrators to no end, a thing that Shyvana OriginalSquare Shyvana, the Half-Dragon, found out firsthand. Dragons of Runeterra have great species diversity, with over 200 types of talking dragons being present in Ionia alone according to Irelia OriginalSquare Irelia. 01IO030-full Empyreans are a breed of wingless wind dragons of Ionia that reside above the clouds, constantly moving with the wind. The firstborn female dragons of certain dragon bloodlines have elemental rune shards within them, which gives them their elemental powers. There are over five types of elemental dragons, including Cloud DrakeSquare Cloud, Infernal DrakeSquare Infernal, Mountain DrakeSquare Mountain, Ocean DrakeSquare Ocean drakes and Elder DragonSquare Elder Dragons. While dragons reside across Runeterra, elemental drakes mostly reside in Ixtal and can rarely be found elsewhere. As matter imitates the shape of greater energies, similar to how a logarithmic spiral is found in a nautilus shell and a galaxy, they are shaped after their celestial counterparts.
  • Galio OriginalSquare Golems: Whether created from origins organic or inorganic, Golems are artificial constructs designed by sentient hand to provide a tireless aide for the plethora of purposes it was made for, usually combining multiple capabilities for a multitude of work or a focused specialty otherwise unachievable by a normal person. Golems are made with either a semblance of intelligence or full-fledged sentience, although creation of them are frowned upon by people for reasons ranging from ethical to moral. The Demacian artificer Durand's creations, most notably his magnum opus Galio OriginalSquare Galio, and the steam construct of Viktor OriginalSquare Viktor named Blitzcrank OriginalSquare Blitzcrank are two of the most famous of these creations.
  • Alistar OriginalSquare Minotaurs: Enormous humanoid bovines. They live in great tribes in the vicinity of Piltover and Noxus, and are quite noble and valorous in their ways. Many Minotaur clans joined the Noxian Minotaur Smith war machine; those that opposed the empire have been enslaved and forced to fight as gladiators in the brutal Noxian event known as the Fleshing. Alistar OriginalSquare Alistar, the Minotaur, is a survivor of this game and seeks to protect his people from the harsh treatment he endured. Some minotaurs migrated to Demacia and integrated into the kingdom's society; there are even some in the Dauntless Vanguard Crest icon Dauntless Vanguard.
  • Kindred OriginalSquare Spirits: Creatures that inhabit the ether and are divorced from the mortality that mortals suffer, spirits are similar to Celestials in a sense that they help maintain the balance of the natural world, intervening every now and then, whether the causes they support are maligned by mortals or revered by them. Spirits are deathless, returning to the ether when their physical vessels are destroyed and return again to continue their crusade. The Meeps that accompany Bard is an example of such supernatural longevity. With spirits, the observer's perception seems to actually affects physical reality of the observed creature. (e.g. our feelings, ideas, and preconceptions affect the manifestation -- do you face the wolf or the lamb? knowing they are actually the same being?) Often these spirits beings, or spirits empowered beings, also seem to have some sort of natural ability to alter their physicality. Spirits are seemingly not "tied" to a shape or to time in the same way we are. The Kindred OriginalSquare Kindred, known as Lamb's Mask profileicon Lamb and Wolf's Mask profileicon Wolf, are the twin essences of death (the quick and painless, and the long and violent deaths). This means that some spirit's have the capabilities of a god or a godlike being. In Ionia, it is the charge of the Shen OriginalSquare Eye of Twilight to ensure the balance between the spirit and mortal realm be maintained.
    • Anivia OriginalSquare Spirit Gods: They are manifestations of cultural ideas, given immense power by the belief of their followers. They can wax and wane, depending - or disappear for a long, long time. They are usually depicted as they appear in the Freljord because this is where they are the most revered, worshiped, culturally important, and arguably appear the most. They may have different forms (which may exist simultaneously) across Runeterra and often look differently but still connect to the same source energy. Kindred OriginalSquare Kindred, Ornn OriginalSquare the Anivia OriginalSquare Freljordian Volibear OriginalSquare demi-gods and potentially Janna OriginalSquare Janna fall into this category. Tahm Kench OriginalSquare Tahm Kench may be a form of a Freljordian demigod.
    • Nocturne OriginalSquare Demons: Spiritual beings with no inherent form, who are forged and driven by the thoughts and feelings of mortals. Specifically, demons are malign and manipulate victims to sate their own desires for suffering, such as Evelynn OriginalSquare Evelynn who has horrifically tortured victims of her Allure allure to give herself pleasure from their pain ever since she was awakened by the Rune Wars, and Tahm Kench OriginalSquare Tahm Kench who traps the desperate in deals that cannot be kept to satisfy his hunger for despair.Demons can be caught and have their power nullified by more powerful magic and petricite.
    • Pix, Faerie Companion Faerie: Playful, winged, humanoid creatures that are smaller than the yordles. They are born from lily flowers in The Glade, as stated by Pix himself. Also, they inhabit the forests of the latter. They have capricious abilities of transfiguration and matter distortion and their glades seem to exist in dimensions far removed from the normal flow of time. One can only enter their glades when invited by a Faerie, as Pix, Faerie Companion Pix has done with the yordle Lulu OriginalSquare Lulu.
    • Little Legend Nixie profileicon Nixies: This mischievous prankster from the spirit realm enjoys playing tricks on hapless mortals who have the misfortune of stumbling upon them. Sweet one moment and deadly the next, Nixie's pranks sometimes take on a life of their own.
    • Sprite River Tier 1 River Sprites: River Sprites are small nature spirits that inhabit magically rich rivers and similar bodies of water.
    • Maokai OriginalSquare Treants: They are a fusion of nature spirits (or any sapient species) and plant life. One such species was the Omikayalan God-Willow, which essence was later transferred to the Freljordian warrior Ivern OriginalSquare Ivern. Other example is Maokai OriginalSquare Maokai, a nature spirit fused with the plant life and natural magicks of the Blessed Isles. Besides treants that share humanoid physical and sapient characteristics, there are those that take animalistic forms and behaviors such as those that take form of felines, lizards, or toads. A vast majority of these treants are corrupted by the undead magics of the Shadow Isles Crest icon Shadow Isles and have lost most of their sapience due to the Ruination. Maokai is among the being the very few Blessed Isles Crest icon Blessed Isles treants that survived such a fate.
    • Nemesis Draft profileicon Yordles: Bipedal mammalian like magical beings of small stature. They live in a magically area known as Bandle City, completely inaccessible besides several gateways scattered across Runeterra. Yordles appearance and behavior closely ties with the physical location they inhabit.
  • Vastayashai'rei: They are enlightened mortals that took the power of the spirit realm into themselves. This granted them near immortality, potent shapeshifting powers and the ability to use the natural world as a weapon in order to fight a race of titans from the sky that threatens Ionia Crest icon The First Lands. It is unknown what happened to them after ancient times.
    • Gift of Magic profileicon Vastaya: They are a chimeric race of Runeterra that are the weaker magical descendants of the Vasthayshai'rei. They originate from Ionia, but have later spread all across Runeterra. Each of the Vastayan Tribes of each region of the world have adapted to their environment and as such differ greatly form one-another in appearance. Humans with distant Vastayan heritage have shapeshifting abilities. They are sometimes mistakenly referred to as taller yordles.
  • Subjugate HD Trolls: Grotesque, humanoid species that are known to inhabit the Freljord and Shurima.
    • Frost Trolls: They are mostly blue-skinned and live in tribes. Lately, the frost trolls have begun preparing for war, rallying under the banner of Trundle OriginalSquare Trundle, the Troll King.
      • Iceborn Trolls: A rare trait in Trolls that enables them to wield True Ice weapons. Any of the Troll sub-races can also be Iceborn. Trundle OriginalSquare Trundle is an Iceborn Frost Troll that's able to wield a True Ice club.
    • Sand Trolls: Illusive species of trolls rumored to live in Shurima and Ixtal. It is unknown how many sand trolls are left as their kind are considered a myth in modern times.
  • Shadow Isles Hauntling profileicon Undead: Abominable creatures, created when the barrier between life and death is shattered and defiled. They predominantly reside in the Shadow Isles, their influence and manifestations reaching other shores. However, there are multiple types of undead that do not originate from The Ruination. Undead can be souls that take physical forms or reanimated beings.
  • Void profileicon Voidspawn: They are Runeterran beings constructed by the Watchers of The Void. Their reason for existing is to accept, consume, and learn all the information about Runeterra necessary enough to aid for the eventual return of the Watchers. In Shurima they are referred to as "outerbeasts". Voidborn are creatures born directly from the Void while Voidlings are their descendants in the material realm.
    • Baron NashorSquare Baron Nashor: A Voidborn creature residing somewhere in Valoran. This one of a kind creature has a shape and behavior of a river serpent. What differentiates it from a regular serpent is its numerous arachnid appendages, as well as two additional mouths protruding from its head area. The creature has 12 eyes (some of them injured due to past battles), a mouth with sharp teeth that can gape open wide for larger prey, and horned like crests on the top of the head. The colours of the creatures exoskeleton go from dark purple to light teal. This creature was believed to be deceased for numerous centuries.
    • Rek'Sai OriginalSquare Xer'Sai: The Xer plague the southern deserts of Shurima. They are the size of big dogs on average, but can be smaller and much bigger. Rek'Sai OriginalSquare Rek'Sai is by far the biggest and the most dangerous of the species. Xer'Sai burst from their small burrows and savage anything nearby, at the detriment of desert caravans. Once dead, the Xer'sai decompose at an abnormally rapid rate and become inedible. Only Rek'Sai OriginalSquare Rek'Sai is considered a voidborn, while the rest of her Xer'Sai are not and are only considered to originate from her.
  • Death Sworn Viktor profileicon Watchers: A fearsome and powerful race of Void creatures that have been deliberately removed from the histories of Freljord by the Ice Witch's unseen hand, these creatures of the Void claimed domain over the Freljord in ancient times. The Watchers were the makers of the Voidborn and Iceborn who said to have served them faithfully in exchange of the vast powers granted unto to them. Their reign of terror was only halted by the rebellion started by Avarosa and Serylda and ended by Lissandra when she sealed her former masters in True Ice under the Howling Abyss. However, the ice prison is starting to melt.
  • Willump OriginalSquare Yeti: A mammalian race that inhabit the Freljord. They are intelligent beings that used to live in harmony with other creatures, like the Yordles. However, after an icy catalysm that decimated their population, the yeti race was never restored to its original numbers and is are a rarity to encounter. While peaceful in nature, most yeti are protective of their own kind and can use violence if necessary for defense. Willump OriginalSquare Willump greatly differs from his yeti counterparts both in appearance and magical prowess.
Other Sapient Races

These mostly refers to sapient races that largely display fauna-like behavior, but are capable of complex thoughts and behaviors typically seen in main sapient races.

  • 02BW019-full Bubble Bears: They are creatures resembling Axolotls that live in the shallow waters of the Guardian's Sea. Their unique body structure gives them an appearance of a living bubble, with sharp claws and hoof-like feet. They feed on magically infused bubbles that emerge from the surrounding vents where they live.
  • Yuumi OriginalSquare Cats: They are a sentient feline race resembling Felis catus that reside both on Runeterra as well as Bandle City. While they have the physical appearance of regular real world house cats, they possess human or above human intelligence, being able to think of complex ideas and inventions. Professor von Yipp is a cat that is able to create giant mechs and submarines, while Yuumi OriginalSquare Yuumi possesses magical abilities with the help of Book OriginalSquare Book.
  • 02BW014-full Coral Creatures: They are semi-plant species of living coral that live in the shallow waters of the Guardian's Sea. They display some form of sentients and sapience, being able to stand up right and have poseable hands with which they use for rudimentary tools and to gather and consume magically infused bubbles that emerge from the surrounding vents. They live in large groups and tend to inhabit areas where non-sentient coral is located which they use to disguise themselves from possible predators.
  • 02BW047-full Dredge Dredgers: They are goblin-like creatures that live around the Serpent Isles and the Guardian's Sea. The are sentient and sapient beings able to wear humanoid clothing, use tools, and express themselves. It is unclear if they have one eye or two, since members of their race often wear squids as hats. They have yellow skin and share some visual similarities with Yordles.
  • 02BW033-full Fish Folk: They are sentient and sapient fish people that live around the Serpent Isles. They key physical features resemble that of a cat fish as well as the Demon of Addiction, Tahm Kench OriginalSquare Tahm Kench.
  • Soft-nosed Molediver profileicon Moledivers: They are small mole-like mammals adapted to a subterranean lifestyle. They have cylindrical bodies; velvety fur; very small, inconspicuous ears and eyes; reduced hindlimbs; and short, powerful forelimbs with large paws adapted for digging. They are able to wield small tools and equipment.
  • Traveler's Penguin profileicon Pengu: An avian species, these aquatic flightless birds are mostly seen around the tundra region. Highly adapted for life in the water, pengus have countershaded dark and white plumage, and their wings have evolved into flippers. They can also be seen Pengu Featherknight profileicon wielding primitive tools.
  • PoroSquare Poros: PoroSquare Poros are an are the mysterious, magical, and most-loved creatures originating from the Howling Abyss. Poros are equal parts truth, valor, and innocence. The colour of their fur is described as “very light blue, like Freljord Crest icon Freljordian snow”. They have a heart-shaped underbelly because they're made of love. A poro's horns perk up when it's excited and droop down when it's scared. Poros paddle through deep snow with their front paws. Some believe that poros are indestructible. Poros stick their tongue out because they are incredibly warm. This is why they can survive the harsh cold environment of the Howling Abyss. Poro-Snax item Poro-Snax are frosted with Freljordian ice crystals and are a favourite treat of this creature. The leader of the Poros is known as the Poro KingSquare Poro King.
  • 02BW040-full Shellshockers: They are turtle-like creatures that live in the shallow waters of the Guardian's Sea. They display some form of sentients and sapience, being able to stand up right and have poseable hands with which they use for rudimentary tools and organic cannons that shoot out magically infused bubbles.
