General

Mordekaiser might have been inspired by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, particularly Conquest.

Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant

Mordekaiser is voiced by Fred Tatasciore.^[1]
His Death's Grasp mirrors Darius' Apprehend: both abilities pull in their targets as well as passively grant their casters magic penetration and armor penetration, respectively.
Death's Grasp can be a reference to the item Deathfire Grasp, as both showcase a green claw hand.
The abilities reference metal songs or bands.^[2]
- Obliterate, the grindcore band from Košice.
- Indestructible, the song by Disturbed.
- Darkness Rise could be referencing the song, Atlas, Rise by Metallica, or The Rise Of Darkness by Immortal.
- Realm of Death, Beyond the Realms of Death by Judas Priest.
- Also, Mordekaiser's mace references Nightfall by Blind Guardian.

Mordekaiser, the Master of Metal

Mordekaiser was the only champion without any mobility or crowd control effects until V5.4 onwards where Creeping Death was changed to give him situational bonus movement speed.
Mordekaiser might have been responsible for around 80% of all live bugs in League of Legends.^[3]
Mordekaiser's abilities referenced heavy/thrash metal songs and/or bands:
- Iron Man by Black Sabbath
- (M)Ace of Spades by Motörhead
- Morgenstern (German: 'Morning Star') by Rammstein
- Harvester of Sorrow by Metallica

Mordekaiser used to be one of four champions who use their health as their sole spellcasting resource (the others being Dr. Mundo, Vladimir, and Zac).
Children of the Grave used to apply the longest damage over time in the game (10 seconds).
'Mordekaiser es #1 huehuehue' is the product of 'Brazil 5v5 tier list' by NA Summoner 'SKILLSHOT MASTER' and 'This is why we hate Mordekaiser' by 'McRooster'.
Mordekaiser's helmet resembled the M in Sodom's logo.

Development

Mordekaiser (German: "murder emperor") comes from Yun 'Stich' Lam's (Colt 'Ezreal' Hallam's girlfriend) online identity.^[4]

Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant

Influences for Mordekaiser include the Death Knight from World of Warcraft, the Shugoki and Lawbringer classes from For Honor, C.T. Fletcher, and Dwayne Johnson.^[5]^[6]^[7]
Lorewise, Mordekaiser was moved away from the Shadow Isles because Riot felt necromancy and the undead should exist in the other regions of Runeterra.^[8]
One of the scrapped visual directions that could have been taken with Mordekaiser include making him a miniature version of the Immortal Bastion; his shoulders would be like crenelated towers, his legs would be like walls, and his armor would be more architectural.^[9]^[10]
Mordekaiser's visual goals were to combine the aesthetics of the Shadow Isles and ancient Noxus.^[11]
Inside the Death Realm players were initially supposed to glimpse Mordekaiser's infinite and unknowable nature. This was later changed to a faceless hood and a magic crown, with the idea being to not be able to see his helmet and if you peered under his hood you'd go mad and dissolve into lifeforce.^[12]
During development his armor could explode off, revealing the twisted black iron skeleton underneath.
Mordekaiser's title used to be 'the Master of Metal' and was going to be 'the Lord of Death' but after playerbase contention it was replaced with 'the Iron Revenant'.^[13]
During development his Darkness Rise was called Harvester of Sorrow, referencing his pre-work ability Harvester of Sorrow. His Obliterate was called Nightfall. His Death's Grasp was called Creeping Death or Master of Puppets, referencing Metallica. His Realm of Death was called Damnation, Shadow Realm, Spirit Realm or Death Realm.^[14]^[15]^[16]
One of Mordekaiser's scrapped voice over lines involved asking Kled on their first encounter "What is... a taco?^[17]
Scrapped Mordekaiser spells tested include:^[18]^[19]
- A version of his passive that would enslave the ghost of enemies if he scored a takedown on them.
- A version of his passive where he would have very low attack speed but consecutive mace swings would increase his attack speed, basic attack range and evolve his mace into a flail.
- A version of Obliterate where his mace could turn into a flail and stick into the ground. Mordekaiser could then recast the ability and have a different effect based on where the mace head was relative to Mordekaiser.^[20]
- A version of Indestructible where Mordekaiser would enter his wraith form and become untargetable but couldn't auto attack, similar to Senna's Curse of the Black Mist. During this time he would become weightless and float as if he suddenly weighed nothing, with the idea being that his manifestation in the physical world is transient.^[21]
- A version of Indestructible where he would gain bonus resistances based on nearby enemies and gain slow immunity.
- A spell that would fire a slow circular missile that would open a rift to the death realm.
- A version of Realm of Death where Mordekaiser would create a portal around the target and himself, which, after a few seconds, would drag everyone to the death realm to fight.
- A version of Realm of Death that would create two Dark Passage like objects at the locations where the target and Mordekaiser left to the death realm, that would allow other players to join the fight.
- A version of Realm of Death that would fire a Fear Beyond Death like missile that would send the target to the death realm.
- A version of Realm of Death that would allow Mordekaiser to enter his spirit form and the first enemy who touches his spirit would be sent to the death realm.
- A version of Realm of Death where the barrier around the death realm was a damage zone that would hit players with a strong damage over time if they tried to leave.
A Mordekaiser bug during development included one where someone would be permanently trapped in Realm of Death.^[22]
During development some of Mordekaiser's abilities had AD ratios implemented. This was eventually scrapped due to having limited his item options significantly.^[23]
At start turrets didn't appear inside the Realm of Death. This was eventually changed due to lane opponents not being able to defend themselves when Mordekaiser was ahead.^[24]

Mordekaiser, the Master of Metal

Mordekaiser was voiced by Adam Harrington.
- Shaco, Kassadin, Pre-rework Karthus, and pre-fourth-rework Ryze are/were also voiced by the same voice actor.

Lore

Mordekaiser is at least 1500 years old, but due to the unknown period of time between Sahn-Uzal's death and his resurrection, Mordekaiser's actual age is unknown.
- Morderkaiser was originally resurrected around 400 BN.
Mordekaiser defied death by sheer force of will because he refused to accept the reality around him. He gained necromantic powers by teaching himself Ochnun in the death realm, which allowed him to speak beyond the veil of death to deceive mortals into resurrecting him.^[8]
Mordekaiser's quote ▶️File:"Destiny. Domination. Deceit." OriginalCircle.png would subconsciously inspire Noxus' principles of strength: Vision, Might, and Guile.^[8]
Mitna Rachnun is a portion of the Spirit Realm that Mordekaiser has corrupted for his own uses.^[25]
Mordekaiser's story references Dracula from Castlevania and Sigma from Megaman X.
Mordekaiser's mace being called Nightfall references the eponymous band as well as the eponymous song by Blind Guardian.
- Both it and a child's drawing of old Mordekaiser (standing next to a burning house with 'I ♥ My Daddy' written at the top) can be seen in the game's Mac Version trailer.
The Hall of Bones in Sahn-Uzal/Mordekaiser's lore references Valhalla "Hall of the Slain" in Norse mythology;
However, much to his anger, the dead Sahn-Uzal ended up in an empty, foggy wasteland with other lost souls fading into oblivion;
- This wasteland likely references Sheol, a dark realm where both the righteous and the wicked will go to after death, in Hebrew mythology.
The Elixir of Uloa has the properties to resurrect Mordekaiser.
His armor has two layers of metal, a black iron skeletal under-layer and the tarnished proto-noxian armour on top of that.^[26]

Original Mordekaiser

Variations of the Season 2019 Split 2 emotes are given to players who play enough ranked to obtain 500 Split Poins. This emote was the first appearance of the reworked Original Mordekaiser months before the champion's update reveal.
- His appearance was also revealed through a Season 2019 Split 2 summoner icon later on during the Public Beta Environment cycle.
The cape he wears has a sigil on it with a design made of Ochnun symbols that translate to "Mordekaiser".
Mordekaiser created the symbol, a tower on a hill, on his cape during his second life, it represents his dreams, ambitions and destiny.^[27]

- He used to have an upward spike on his belt (might have been referencing William Murderface from Metalocalypse) but was promptly removed for suggestiveness.
- He resembles Sauron from The Lord of the Rings, Melkor from The Silmarillion, the titular character from Overlord, Araghast the Pillager a Chaos Lord from Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising, and The Lich from Adventure Time.

Pentakill Mordekaiser

This skin shares the Pentakill theme with:

Nightfall is replaced with Numero Uno (an indestructible guitar axe made of metal and made for metal) everytime he does his dance animation.
- In his splash art Mordekaiser can be seen wielding his guitar instead of his mace.
He embarked on a metal-fueled journey to recruit Pentakill Karthus, Pentakill Yorick, Pentakill Sona, Pentakill Olaf, and their backup-singer Pentakill Kayle in order to form Pentakill so they can usher in a new era of metal.
His updated appearance was based on his appearance in one of the Grasp of the Undying music videos; more specifically Mortal Reminder.
- His back tattoos showcase Kindred masks of Lamb and Wolf.

King of Clubs Mordekaiser

This skin shares the Highstakes theme with:

He was originally conceived as 'Dark Crusader' but was scrapped.
He references the eponymous playing card.
He resembles King Knight from Shovel Knight.

- His throne used to be shorter and have Nightfall resting on its back (was later changed to a taller throne due to concerns it resembled a Christian Cross).

Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant

Mordekaiser built the Immortal Bastion, a fortress which the capitol of Noxus is built around.
Given Sahn-Uzal (Mordekaiser when he was human)'s faith in the Hall of Bones, it's safe to say his culture did not have a Kindred myth; which would explain why he was never claimed by them.
Mordekaiser tortured Veigar, who would later mimic him after his downfall.
LeBlanc was instrumental to his downfall.
Januk tasked Ezreal to obtain The Elixir of Uloa with which he would be able to resurrect Mordekaiser. However, Ezreal intentionally gave him a fake vial and left Januk while stealing an old Ochnun bell.

Mordekaiser is building his strength in the Shadow Isles until he can lay waste to Noxus and reclaim the Immortal Bastion (his old fortress laying at the heart of Noxus Prime).
