Life steal is an offensive stat which grants
healing equal to a percentage of the damage dealt by basic attacks, including those that are modified (such as or Spellblade). It applies to abilities that trigger
on-hit effects (e.g. , , ). It does not benefit from
Heal Power. Most items that deal on-hit damage benefit from life steal.
The heal is based on the post-mitigation damage dealt, or after sources of armor, magic resistance, and damage reduction are taken into account to the damage.
All champions have 0% base life steal, but it can be increased by some items, runes, and abilities.

Damage which applies life steal
Generally speaking, all basic damage applies life steal by default, regardless of subtype:
physical damage dealt by
basic attacks,
magic damage dealt by basic attacks and
true damage dealt by all restore health based on the damage dealt in conjunction with life steal.
For damage types other than basic damage to apply life steal, they have to be tagged as such:
"Applies life steal" is a damage tag that gives an ability the property of having a damage source apply life steal like
basic attack damage would.
This tag is located on some abilities that deal spell damage (e.g. and ) and items that deal on-hit damage.
Life steal does not have a penalty for area of effect abilities and is always applied to the damage dealt at 100% effectiveness, unless otherwise specified. Unlike Vamp, the "applies life steal" tag applies life steal directly and does not
heal based on damage dealt and the life steal stat. Therefore healing modifiers that affect life steal also affect abilities with the "applies life steal" tag.
