Lab of Legends is a single-player campaign-style lab where the player's deck grows as they progress through a linear series of levels. It bears some similarities to roguelike[1] games. The player chooses from several starting decks and special abilities and acquires more abilities, cards and buffs to add to their deck as they defeat levels.

Description[]

Choose a champion and challenge a gauntlet of increasingly powerful foes! The player will face nine AI decks, including three bosses. Victories will earn them rewards that increase the strength of their cards. Achieve a total victory with a champion to earn a unique icon.

Before a "run" (or campaign) the player selects one of several Starting Decks, each of which is themed after a champion. In each run the player goes through a linear series of stages.

The player's nexus starts each run with 30 health. At the beginning of each stage the nexus has the same health it had at the end of the previous stage. There is a exception, though: the health of the nexus is restored back to full after defeating a boss (see Stages). If the player's nexus reaches 0, they lose and have to start the challenge from the beginning if they want to play again. The player can retire the run at any time.

When the player defeats the final boss they win the run and collect any rewards available. At this point the next level of difficulty becomes available for the champion with which the player won the run with. This is indicated in the main screen of the lab with a checkmark on the champion and difficulty the run was completed on.

Difficulty[]

Players can choose between Normal (default), Hard, Heroic, and Legendary levels of difficulty. Completing a run with a champion on a difficulty level unlocks the next difficulty level for that champion. Each difficulty level includes all the challenges of the previous difficulty level plus some added ones:

  • Hard: The enemy starts with +5 maximum nexus health. Champions get items of their own. (See Hard Difficulty column in Stages.)
  • Heroic: Some enemy followers have items. The enemy summons reinforcements at the start of the game. (See Heroic Difficulty column in Stages.)
  • Legendary: The enemy refills its spell mana at Round Start.

Stages[]

Enemy decks are themed after the card shown in the preview of each stage. In each stage the enemy has a Passive Power that fits the theme of its deck - these powers have specified rarities. There are six normal stages and three boss stages. The decks in the boss stages include champions, while the decks in the normal stages don't.

In normal difficulty the enemy nexus has 10 health in the first three stages, 20 health in stages 4-6 and 30 health in stages 7-9.

Special Buffs[]

Passive Powers[]

Passive powers are abilities applied to the player's Nexus. At the start of the run and after defeating Thresh and Sejuani, the player can choose one power from three randomly selected from the pool below. The higher the rarity of a power, the less likely it is that it is offered to the player. Unique passive powers can be obtained more than once in a run, and their effects stack.

Rerolling powers at the start of a run does not consume the player's rerolls.

Support Champion Pack[]

The player can add a champion pack to their deck. The choices presented are three packs randomly selected from the list below. Each pack includes two copies of the listed cards.

Reinforcements[]

Reinforcements will allow the player to add copies of one from a selection of three cards to their deck. These cards can also be ones that already exist in the player's deck. The cards chosen are entirely random and will not take into account what's best for the deck they have.

Later in the lab the player also get the choice of selecting cards with items attached to them, or adding items to cards already in their deck. Like with passive powers, the rarity will affect the likelihood of receiving the item. The item given to the card will also be completely random and will not necessarily synergize for the card it's applied to.

Champion Item[]

The player be given the choice of one of three items to grant to one champion of their choosing. This can include champions added by reinforcements or the support champion pack. They'll also gain an additional copy of that champion.

Items[]

Items are buffs granted to all copies of one selected card. There is no limit to the number of items a card can have. When a card has an item, a small hexagonal icon will appear on the card in the deck preview to the left outside of matches with a number indicating the number of items it has. Some items are exclusive to spells or units.

We’re going to keep exploring incremental improvements to the existing Lab ... Stay tuned for another major step forward coming in the next few months. We’re on a journey with a clear goal: we want to create a permanent experience that players can keep coming back to for years to come.
Link=Riot Riot Exis, Experimenting With Labs
  • Lab of Legends was considered successful internally, and for new and returning players.[2]
    • At the time, Lab of Legends was the Lab that had been in the game for the longest time, in consecutive patches or otherwise.
    • Due to its success, it was decided to give Lab of Legends gradual improvements over its lifespan.
  • The stated eventual goal is to create a more permanent PvP experience.

Trivia[]
