Development

- Original Kayn, Odyssey Kayn, HEARTSTEEL Kayn, and 5Kayn, 5The Shadow Assassin in Legends of Runeterra are voiced by Robbie Daymond, who also voiced Chadd in CONV/RGENCE.
- Original Rhaast, Dark Star Rhaast, HEARTSTEEL Rhaast, and 5Rhaast in Legends of Runeterra were voiced by the late Sam A. Mowry.
- In the Japanese dub, Kayn is voiced by KENN, while Rhaast is voiced by Kenichirou Matsuda.[1]
- Blood splatters from Kayn’s weapon started as water splatters in Riot’s campus showers.[2]
- During development, he was called Nemesis.[3]
Universe

- Kayn is around 20 years old.
- He was 'no more than 10' when Zed had taken him in into the Shadow Order.
- He was 'no more than 10' when
- Rhaast is between 3496 and 4396 years old.
- The blue streak in Kayn's hair is the result of using Rhaast.[4]
- In Zed: Issue 6 it is revealed that Rhaast's corruption of Kayn's left arm is able to be reverted back to normal by either Rhaast's or Kayn's will.

- Kayn is one of 21 champions without a single ability power ratio on any ability: Aatrox, Camille, Darius, Dr. Mundo, Draven, Garen, K'Sante, Kayn, Kled, Naafiri, Nilah, Olaf, Pyke, Riven, Samira, Sett, Talon, Urgot, Xayah, Yone, and Zed.
- He is the seventh dark-themed Ionian-affiliated champion (albeit Noxian-born), after Shen, Varus, Syndra, Zed, Xayah & Jhin; as well as the second-known member from the Order of Shadow.
- His given name Shieda is pronounced /ˈʃi:da/, and is Ionian in origin.[5]
- His stint as a child-soldier references conscription of children;
- Not all Noxian commanders condone their colleagues' callousness, though they at least turn a blind eye.
- While in Darkin form, the champion's ability tooltips change to read "Rhaast" instead of "Kayn".
- His dance references the Reebok dance.
- If you are tied in orbs for The Darkin Scythe, you will be defaulted to Rhaast.[9]
- Although patch V7.16 made it so the portrait of the selected skin would be used in the central portion of the in-game UI, transforming into Shadow Assassin or Rhaast always uses their base portraits for all skins. (Not true since V13.23)
- The Darkin Scythe's icons upon transformation for Shadow Assassin and Darkin are both reused for the Teamfight Tactics items Kayn's Liberation and Rhaast's Embrace respectively, which reference him and Rhaast.

- ▶️ "ORA, ORA, ORA." references the battle cry from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga/anime.
- ▶️ "You want it? You have to take it." references the quote of Vergil from Devil May Cry 5 videogame.
- ▶️ "K/DA? I'll show them what I'm made of." is a possible reference to the song I'LL SHOW YOU by K/DA.
- ▶️ "It's all blood, sweat and tears." references the eponymous song by BTS.
- ▶️ "Tired? I could do this all day!" most likely references Captain America's catchphrase.
Skins

- His appearance was inspired by Amon from the Devilman manga/anime series.
- The method in which Darkin possess human bodies is similar to how Demons possess humans in Devilman. Humans in both instances can also overpower the demon/darkin and use their power as their own.
- His appearance pays homage to both Dante and Vergil from Devil May Cry video games series, with Vergil's bluish color scheme and Dante's casual & confident attitude that he can subdue any demonic weapon to his will.
- Meanwhile, Rhaast's resembles Dante's reddish Devil Trigger forms.
- Other influences are various scythe-wielders in video games.

- Kayn may be a possible reference to character Ling Yao from the Fullmetal Alchemist manga/anime. Both characters share similarities in that a superhuman entity reside in them which vies for control of their bodies (Rhaast, a Darkin inside Kayn and Greed, a Homunculus inside Ling Yao). Moreover, Kayn shares quite a lot of similarities in character design with Ling Yao.
- Kayn could also similar to character Masane Amaha from the Witchblade anime (An adaptation of comic of the same name). Both wield weapons that are sentient in nature and try to take control of their bodies (Kayn's Scythe contains Rhaast, and Masane's gauntlet contains an unnamed entity), as well as both of them possessing supernatural powers.
- This skin shares the Bilgewater: Curse of the Drowned theme with:
- The Shadow Assassin form seems to reference the Abyss Watchers from Dark Souls III.
- Alternatively the long white hair, red cloak with a tricorne hat and the spell book clasped to his waist could serve as a reference to Final Fantasy's Red Mage.
- In the Russian localization, he was originally called 'Showerhunter Kayn' due to a naming error.[10]

- The hairstyle resemble the villain Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in The Fifth Element movie, and his face to Kela De Thaym in Warframe videogame series.
- Both he and Sona, have the same yellow eyes and body marks because of the Ora in their body. They respectively reference Prince Nuada and Princess Nuala from the Hellboy II: The Golden Army movie.

- The music that plays during his dance is a remix of Mass Effect's Uncharted Worlds.
- Dark Star Rhaast , who currently resides in the Odyssey universe, originally hails from the Event Horizon universe.
