Karthus is a champion in League of Legends.[1]

Death Defied

Death Defied.png

Innate: Upon taking Death.png fatal damage, Karthus Omen of Death.png remains active for 7 seconds, rendering himself unable to move, basic attack, use summoner spells, or activate items, but becoming Playful.png untargetable and Cc-immune icon.png immune to crowd control and preventing all incoming damage for the duration as well as being able to cast abilities at no cost.

If Defile Defile has been learned, it will remain toggled on for Death Defied's entire duration. Requiem Requiem becomes disabled after Death Defied has lasted 4 seconds.

  • Upon Death.png Death, Karthus loses all Malefic Visions.png status effects (inherently including Stun icon.png crowd control effects) that do not inherently persist through death.
    • An example for a debuff that does persist through death is Brand's Brand's Blaze Blaze.
  • Death Defied's Playful.png untargetability does not Bullet strikethrough.png destroy in-flight Projectile.png projectiles.
  • Chronoshift Chronoshift and Guardian Angel Guardian Angel will take priority over Death Defied.
  • Death Defied will still trigger if Karthus is killed by the Nexus Obelisk.png Nexus Obelisk.
  • Karthus cannot be Death from Below.png executed by the Aspect of the Dragon Aspect of the Dragon during Death Defied.
  • At the start of Death Defied, Karthus is set to Health icon.png 1 health.
    • Karthus can still regenerate his health over the duration, but he will always die at the end of it.
  • After Death Defied ends, the corpse of Karthus will retain unit collision despite being dead on the ground.
  • Karthus' mana bar drains over the duration of Death Defied as an indicator of his time remaining in this state.

Active: Karthus creates a blast at the target location which detonates after 0.528 seconds to 0.759 seconds, granting Sight icon.png sight of the area before dealing magic damage to all enemies within, Critical strike magic icon.png doubled when hitting only one target.

45 / 62.5 / 80 / 97.5 / 115 (+ 35% AP)
Enhanced Damage:
90 / 125 / 160 / 195 / 230 (+ 70% AP)

Lay Waste's damage is reduced by 15% against Monster icon.png monsters.

38.25 / 53.125 / 68 / 82.875 / 97.75 (+ 29.75% AP)
Enhanced Monster Damage:
76.5 / 106.25 / 136 / 165.75 / 195.5 (+ 59.5% AP)

During Death Defied Death Defied, Lay Waste will cast at maximum range if cast beyond that.

  • The delay between the cast and the detonation is inconsistent, but always matches up with the VFX.(note)
    • Defile's Defile's ticks beyond the first has a similar issue.
  • Applies Disintegrate.png spell damage if it hits a single target and Death Lotus.png area damage if it hits multiple targets.
    • Lay Waste also plays a different sound effect when it only hits one target.

Active: Karthus summons a passable wall of spectral energy at the target location perpendicular to his facing for 5 seconds, granting Sight icon.png sight around its pillars and center.

Enemies that pass through the wall for the first time from the same cast are Slow icon.png slowed for 4 seconds, decaying over the duration, and have their Magic penetration icon.png magic resistance reduced by 15% for the same duration.

Passive: Karthus restores Mana icon.png mana whenever he kills an enemy.

Toggle: Karthus surrounds himself with a necrotic aura, dealing magic damage every 0.25 seconds to all nearby enemies. Toggling Defile off triggers a tick of damage.

Magic Damage Per Tick:
7.5 / 12.5 / 17.5 / 22.5 / 27.5 (+ 5% AP)
Damage Per Second:
30 / 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 (+ 20% AP)

Defile cannot be toggled off during Death Defied Death Defied, but it can be while channeling Requiem Requiem.

  • Toggle abilities do not count as ability activations for the purposes of on-cast effects such as Sheen item.png Spellblade and stacking Force Pulse Force Pulse.
  • Defile also restores Mana resource.png mana if Karthus destroys an enemy structure.
  • Defile will automatically toggle on during Death Defied Death Defied.
  • Defile re-evaluates its damage with each tick, thus gaining/losing Ability power icon.png AP or putting skill points into the ability will affect it immediately without the need to toggle it off and back on again.
  • Defile will toggle off automatically if Karthus enters Revival icon.png resurrection.

  • Requiem's channel is telegraphed to all enemy champions by a beam of light that descends on all targets, including if they are Playful.png untargetable or even Death.png dead.
  • Requiem will affect Command Hallucinate.png clones.
  • The damage will apply spell effects to targets in an order based on proximity to Karthus. Single target spell effects (such as Luden's Tempest Luden's Tempest) are thus triggered on the closest enemy champion.

    • Wall of Pain Wall of Pain (W)
      • Stretches a perpendicular wall through the target location, enemies who walk through it are slowed and take increased damage.
    • Defile Defile (E)
      • While toggled on, Defile continually damages nearby enemies. While off, Karthus regains mana whenever he kills a unit.
    • Fallen One Fallen One (Ultimate)
      • Channeled spell; upon successful cast, Karthus damages all enemy champions in the game.
