Jayce Talis is a scientist and one of the main characters who appears in Arcane. After years of success leading
Piltover's scientific and consequently its economic progress, he becomes the current De-Facto Head of the Council of Piltover.
Background
Early Life
Not much is known about Jayce's earliest moments in Piltover. At some point his father passed away, leaving the Talis family hammer business to him and his mother .
When Jayce was young, he and his mother got caught in a snowstorm seemingly with no one around for miles. Just when his mother collapsed, a cloaked man arrived who used magic to warp them a safe distance away from the blizzard. The man left Jayce the crystal he'd used for his spell. This encounter shaped young Jayce's desire to learn more about magic, which led to him basing his life's work on researching how to harness magic through science.[1]
Being part of House Talis, a family of renowned toolmakers most known for their hammers and the collapsible pocket wrench, most expected Jayce to join their family business.[1][2] Jayce, however, was determined in his research into science and the Arcane. Eventually, he became a scholar at the Academy in Piltover where he was favored by the Dean and the Head of the Council, Professor , and by the
Kirammans who saw his ambition and decided to support him as his patrons.[1]
Hextech Revolution
Some time after buying supplies from in the Lanes,[3][1] Jayce returned to his workshop just in time for him to realize that it had been broken into. of the children inside accidentally dropped one of his many unstable crystals and caused an explosion. This alerted Heimerdinger, the authorities, and the Council of his unauthorized research and was put on trial in front of the Council.
Despite Heimerdinger's suggestion, Jayce told the Council about his research being for harnessing magic through science in an emotional plea. However, rather than convincing the Council that the benefits of his work would be revolutionary and that Piltover can master the science, his plea invoked fear among the Council of the dangers of unchecked magic in the hands of those with no innate Arcane talent. Councilor moved to have Jayce exiled, after which Jayce's mother stepped forward and pled his case. Heimerdinger allowed it and instead asked the Council for a more lenient punishment—Jayce's expulsion from the Academy. Councilor turned her back on Jayce, though their daughter maintained her belief in him, and he was resigned to the idea that he would have to follow in his father's footsteps after all.

To Jayce, his punishment was worse than death, to the point where he contemplated jumping off of his former workshop's building, before he was stopped by , the Dean's assistant, who decided to help him with his research.[1] Jayce made Viktor his partner and with Viktor's advice, Jayce realized how he could stabilize the hex crystals and create magic. Racing against time to prove the efficacy of his research the day before his equipment is scheduled to be destroyed, Viktor and helped him break into Heimerdinger's laboratory to reclaim his crystals and materials, and ultimately test their theory.
Their attempts with their new calculations caused bright lights and a minor explosion that caught the attention of Heimerdinger and the enforcers, but by the time they'd forced their way into the laboratory, the crystal had stabilized; with Jayce, Viktor, and other objects around them floating in the air with the crystal. Harnessing magic was proven possible. Jayce coined the term "Hextech" as the science and practice of harnessing magic via technology. Though Heimerdinger was impressed, he was still conflicted about embracing it due to the risks it posed, but the ambitious arrived and proclaimed that they should bring it to the Council.[4]
Jayce would eventually earn the support of the other Councilors, working for them to create the Hexgates that revolutionized trade and transportation, and putting Piltover on the map as the global shipping lane. Being credited for Piltover's newfound prosperity, Jayce became popular in Piltover and was given the moniker "The Man of Progress."
Piltovan Bicentennial
During the Piltovan Bicentennial, Jayce and Viktor would present their new inventions and hextech gemstone improvements to , showing him the immediate potentials of hextech as tools for easier labor. Though impressed, Heimerdinger advised the two that they need more time to ensure their inventions were safe enough for use (much to the objections of both Mel and Viktor).
For Progress Day, the Council had Jayce give the event's main speech addressing the attendees, an honor usually only done by Heimerdinger. While Jayce had plans to showcase his new hexgem innovations, he ended up not doing it (much to the disappointment of Mel and Viktor). Before the end of the day, stole one of the gemstones that was intended to be showcased during the speech event; in fear of the thief potentially weaponizing it, Jayce suggested to the Council that they shut down all Hextech operations, worrying the Councilors who have businesses dependent on the Hexgates. then recommended that Jayce be instated as a Council member to better serve his goal of safeguarding the Hexgates and thus all matters dependent on it—a radical suggestion since the Council has traditionally only held seven seats. With Heimerdinger's agreement, the rest of the Council followed and Jayce became the eighth Councilor.[2]
As a councilor, Jayce has been working with Sheriff to track down the thief of the stolen gemstone, and has also began tightening security at the Hexgates, uncovering many forms of illegal trading—including those conducted by Piltovan citizens. However, other councilors took an unfavorable view of Jayce's decisions which protected Piltover from an imminent threat but at their expense. Only Mel supported him in his actions and counseled him, eventually seducing him and becoming his lover. Under Mel's influence, Jayce would quickly adapt to the quid pro quo dynamics of politics and surprisingly became adept at gaining the favor of powerful merchants and councilors. However, while Jayce was distracted with politicking, he failed to recognize Viktor's deteriorating health until he ended up in the hospital.[5]
When Jayce learns that Viktor is dying, Jayce would support his friend in the development of his , which was able to alter organic life (possibly even saving Viktor's). When both of the scientists presented the hexcore to Heimerdinger, the yordle objected to the device's existence, stating that it's too dangerous to exist (possibly causing another magical catastrophe) and that he would do everything to destroy it. Angered by Heimerdinger's reaction, Jayce—thanks to the influence he gained with the other councilors—decides to betray Heimerdinger and demand his council resignation so that Viktor can seek his cure through the hexcore. At the same time, under the advice of Marcus during the conflict between The Lanes and the city of Piltover, Jayce decides to declare a total lockdown on all the bridges connecting north to south of Piltover (where the undercity is located) until a possible solution is found, leaving the people outside on the other side of the city in a state of repudiation and unrest. Furthermore, when Sheriff Marcus informs Jayce that his friend Caitlyn used his authority to release a prisoner named , Jayce pretends to have always sanctioned her endeavor and that she and him are privately collaborating on the matter.[6]
Shimmer Factory Raid
As the tension between Piltover and Zaun rose, Mel suggested to create hextech weapons for the defense of the city, which Viktor vehemently objected to. Due to increased stress, Jayce would take some time at the
3 Talis house forge, making his future . Just recently, he vented his frustrations about the crisis on Viktor when picking him up at the bridge. Viktor was in the undercity the day before the borders closed off and was unaware of the lockdown and greatly upset about Jayce's actions and behavior. Tensions were on an all time high when killed numerous enforcers on the same bridge later during the night, killing Sheriff Marcus in the process.[7]
Due to the inabilities of Piltover to deal with the situation, Mel's mother invited Jayce to her family home, giving him a critique on the Piltover Council's impotence and advice on how to deal with the undercity threat. With Marcus dead, all of his past dealings with the undercity were uncovered from his office, with Jayce and the other council members discussing what to do next. Around the same time, and arrived during the council meeting and implored them to take actions against , as they had evidence that he was behind the recent crisis. While most of the councilors pushed for a diplomatic solution, Jayce wanted to respond with militant action. This would lead Vi to later track Jayce down to his family forge and make a deal with him to work together (taking his ) and assault one of Silco's shimmer factories inside of the undercity.[8]
While Jayce, Vi, and their group of enforcers had some difficulties against the , the assault eventually proved successful. However, during the fight, Jayce unintentionally kills a child (later revealed to be son) that worked in the factory and was caught in the crossfire of the fight.[8] While they were able to dismantle the shimmer production, Jayce would directly experience the price of war when he caused the death of a kid. Vi told him that the exploitation of the undercity inhabitants is a common thing and that the topsiders were oblivious to it, ignored it, and that they directly cause it by allowing the situation to fester. Troubled by the prospect of more death, Jayce ordered the end of all military attacks on Silco. Vi however, argued that the situation in the Undercity will only fester unless they continue to fight Silco. Emotional, Jayce would demand and threaten her to return his —but Vi refused, as she was willing to fight to the death for them. Ultimately he dialed back on his demand once he saw that nothing good would come from a fatal conflict with Vi. Before he leaves Vi to her own devices, he cautions her that she won't make it alone.[9]
Post-Assault
After the assault Jayce would meet up with Viktor, ultimately saving his friend from committing suicide by approaching him the same way Viktor approached him several years ago. Regretting their past actions, both inventors would console each other, with Viktor requesting to Jayce to dismantle the Hexcore for him since he was unable to do it himself.[9]
Ultimately the events of the shimmer factory assault lead Jayce to contact Silco directly. They met privately in a secluded coastal area. Silco would offer his peace proposals: the autonomy and independence of Zaun, blanket amnesty for the people of Zaun, as well as the free access to the shipping lanes and the Hexgates. Jayce in exchange demanded for the dismantling of all shimmer factory and shimmer production, return of the stolen hextech gemstone, as well as extradition of Jinx to Piltover (much to Silco's objections).[9]
During the blood moon council meeting, Jayce, accompanied by Viktor, announced his withdraw from the world of politics after his last act: accepting Silco's proposal for peace which would result in Zaun's full independence. Initially, all the councilors besides Mel were vehemently against this proposal. After calming down and some convincing, they unanimously decide to approve the peace treaty; right before hit the council chambers.[9]
It is unknown what happened to all the councilors, Jayce, and Viktor after the attack.
Appearance
Jayce is a tall, muscular, and tanned man. He has hazel eyes and styled dark hair. Jayce can be seen wearing typical Piltovan clothing, sometimes wearing more elegant expensive outfits during council matters.
Personality
Jayce Talis is charismatic, idealistic, and altruistic; yet he starts off naive in regards to the complexity and difficulties of the progress that he desires. Jayce is driven to uplift people from suffering and hardship, no matter their lot in life, and is determined to use hextech to empower society to improve their lives. However, Jayce naively thought society would naturally use hextech for the public good and did not take into account that malefactors could misuse hextech for war or to inflict suffering.
Once Jayce realized his hextech enterprise could be used to do the public harm rather than good, Jayce selflessly offers to shut down his hextech enterprise for the security of Piltover. However, the affluent Piltover Councilors who've benefited financially from hextech refuses to relinquish its boons—and with Mel Medarda's meddling, Jayce was thrust to the position of Councilor so that he would be made responsible for the safety of Piltover while Piltover can still reap the benefits of hextech.
Being inexperienced in the volatile politics of Piltover and its increasingly hostile sister city of Zaun, Jayce tries to put the welfare of the people, both Piltover and eventually even Zaun, first. However, Jayce has been forced to compromise his ideals for the sake of pragmatism, even having to conform to the corruption of politics in order to drum up enough support for his agendas and also to protect his House from political enemies. He would betray his longtime mentor Heimerdinger because he continues to obstruct research that could save his friend Viktor's life.
His failure to find perfect, immediate solutions fuel his doubts and causes him to make rash rectifications; even to the point of entering an imprudent conflict with Silco. Ultimately, once he realized his thoughtless actions could endanger innocent Zaunites, Jayce pulls back on reckless conflict and returns to his ideals of trying to do good for all. Jayce then learns to remain steadfast to his ideals and seeks to broker a peace with Zaun. Jayce hopes that by progressing in the right direction, both Piltover and Zaun will eventually find common ground and become allies.
Jayce is not afraid to go against the Piltover Council's wishes (shutting down a shimmer factory as well as making a deal with Silco) or throw his weight around to stop the conflicts between Piltover and Zaun. This illustrates that Jayce doesn't mold his decisions to suit others nor does he seek their approval. For Jayce, he must do what he feels is right regardless of how unpopular it is because it is the only way to ensure society has a brighter future.
Abilities
- Arcane Connection: Like Viktor, Jayce was able to access the Arcane after spending months trapped in the chaotic anomaly generated by the excessive use of Hextech, where he was able to see the true nature of Viktor's followers and feel the threat he represented.
- Diplomacy: While not as skilled as in politics, Jayce's direct actions would lead to many technological innovations that made him a popular figure in Piltover. Jayce was also able to negotiate many deals with Piltover's elite and politicians to support his agendas, as well as a temporary brokered peace between Piltover and Zaun.
- Inventor: A brilliant mind, Jayce is able to invent numerous contraptions, especially those made to utilize hextech gemstones. As a founding father who perfected hextech, he is one of the leading scientists in hextech innovations.
- / : Transforming weapon created by in order to defend Piltover from a possible war with Zaun. He first uses the hammer in a raid on a Shimmer manufacturing factory belonging to the crime boss Silco. It can transform into a powered greathammer that has the hammer's head and pommel enhanced so that its ability to deal heavy blows is intensified—or it can transform into a blaster that can shoot lightning orbs. It can also emit an that surrounds Jayce and knocks back and electrocutes nearby enemies. After spending months inside the chaotic anomaly generated by the excessive use of Hextech, Jayce's hammer underwent a metamorphosis that altered its appearance and the property of the Hextech contained within it.
- Warrior: Years of undertaking physically demanding work in his forge has molded Jayce's body into an athletic physique. He appears to be very strong and has developed enormous stamina and fast reflexes. He has shown himself to be a natural at fighting as evidenced when he managed to defend himself from Chemtank guards and also defeat them in combat with his Mercury Hammer.
Relations
Jayce holds Heimerdinger in high regard and considers him a mentor. Heimerdinger often fears that magic could be too dangerous an enterprise at times but Jayce believes that he will eventually prove to him that Hextech will be a worthy, beneficial endeavor once it is proven safe. For the most part, Jayce heeds Heimerdinger's advice and wisdom; such as when he witheld Hextech inventions from being made public at the 200th Progress Day because Heimerdinger said it needed more safeguards. But Jayce also believes that Heimerdinger could be out of touch, like when he tried to shut down Jayce and Viktor's Hex Core project even though Viktor's life depended on the project's success. Although he did so regrettably, Jayce was willing to convince the Piltover Council to kick Heimerdinger out as a member in order to prevent him from terminating the Hex Core project.
Due to the
Kiramman Clan originally sponsoring Jayce, he would often interact with the daughter of the main clan's leader, Caitlyn. During their childhood days they became close friends, with Jayce seeing her as his little sister that he regaled with stories of his adventures and grand ambitions. After Jayce's expulsion from the Piltover Academy (due to him revealing to the Council of his desires to create magic), the Kirammans who sponsored him shunned him since he became a social embarrassment. Caitlyn's parents forbade Caitlyn of any further interactions with Jayce. This lasted until his successful Hextech experiment, which proved Hextech a viable and revolutionary practice. Jayce's services once again became in demand, after which he regained the Kirammans' favor and was yet again sponsored by them. In contemporary times, Jayce and Caitlyn are still close friends; Jayce would use his position as Councilor to protect her when she does something unsanctioned by her superiors or to provide her with professional opportunities.
During the crisis with Zaun, Caitlyn went to Jayce (and also the rest of the Piltover Council) with Vi to reveal Silco's conspiracy and also to ask for their support in taking down Silco's criminal empire. Caitlyn was shocked at the militant behavior of Jayce, since she feared an extreme response could hurt the innocent people of Zaun. Caitlyn asked what happened to cause such a radical change in him, but Jayce justified his militant proposal by stating that they've been discussing diplomacy with the Undercity for weeks; all the while Piltover has been enduring numerous attacks, including a recent massacre of their Enforcers at the Bridge of Progress.
Jayce met Viktor in the aftermath of his workshop exploding and him being robbed of his Hextech crystals. Viktor was Heimerdinger's assistant and was tasked with confiscating anything from Jayce's Hextech research that could be deemed dangerous.
After Jayce's trial from the Council, Jayce was exiled from the Piltover Academy, abandoned by his sponsors, banned from furthering his research, and his mother tried to convince him to give up on his dream of harnessing magic. With all his support turning their backs on him, Jayce fell into despair and considered suicide. Viktor accidentally interrupted him from throwing his life away and encouraged Jayce to keep on with his Hextech research even though no one believed in him. The two inventors bonded over their idealistic dream to improve the lives of others through technology and shared a vision to realize that dream through Hextech. Jayce and Viktor snuck into Heimerdinger's lab and managed to prove the possibility of harnessing magic through Hextech.
In the following years, Jayce and Viktor became partners and were as close as brothers. After the two proved that Hextech was workable, Piltover's Council sponsored their work. Jayce and Viktor fulfilled the Council's request and constructed the Hexgates, which made Piltover the center of trade and innovation. Jayce and Viktor wanted to expand hextech and make it accessible to everyone—from the rich to the average man. Jayce was marketed as the frontman for the burgeoning Hextech industry and was given the moniker "The Man of Progress" by an adoring public. Jayce offered to do their public presentations together with Viktor but Viktor declined as he preferred to remain behind the scenes. Despite Jayce obtaining fame and being attributed public recognition for their collaborative works on hextech, Viktor didn't become jealous or hold it against Jayce.
Together, Jayce and Viktor invented the hextech gemstones, which made wielding hextech safe for everyone to utilize and could power their new hextech inventions. Heimerdinger was impressed with their progress but believed they needed to spend a decade to put in safeguards on the new hextech technology as he feared putting that kind of power in everyone's hands was too dangerous at the moment. Although Viktor and Jayce were primed to unveil their progress with hextech at Jayce's speech during the 200th Progress Day, Jayce ultimately heeded Heimerdinger's warning and kept their hextech innovations a secret—much to Viktor's disappointment.
Later on, Jinx had killed many Piltover enforcers and stolen their hextech gemstone and hextech research. Fearing that Zaun could weaponize hextech against Piltover, the Council of Clans elevated Jayce to a Councilor and made him responsible for safeguarding Piltover from Zaunite malefactors. Jayce takes his responsibilities as a Councilor seriously and begins cracking down on criminal activities and corruption. This irritates Viktor who thinks his efforts should be focused on the advancement of Hextech and that the people—including the people of Zaun—should have already been reaping the benefits of their hextech inventions. Jayce apologizes for withholding the reveal of their inventions at the Progress Day speech, but Jayce believes his current duty is safeguarding Piltover.
As tensions between Piltover and Zaun escalate and Jinx's weaponry became more dangerous and ingenious, fears of Zaun being able to weaponize the hextech gemstone became more reasonable. It has been suggested to Jayce by Councilor Mel Medarda that he make hextech weapons in preparation to defend Piltover. Viktor is vehemently against the notion as he believes hextech should only be used to improve lives, not take them. Due to the volatility of the situation, Jayce is pressed to consider it.
To make matters worse, Viktor's declining health revealed that he is dying from a terminal disease. Viktor has been independently researching a device called the Hex Core which could save his life. Whatever time Jayce could spare away from his responsibilities as a Councilor was spent collaborating with Viktor in furthering their Hex Core research.
Jayce and Viktor try to get Heimerdinger's insight on their project but Heimerdinger feared the Hex Core so much, that he was determined to shut down their research and destroy it. Aggrieved that Heimerdinger was going to shut down the project that could save Viktor's life, Jayce blamed Heimerdinger's inaction for the danger Zaun posed and convinced the other Councilors to vote him out of the Piltover Council.
Fear of Zaun aggression puts Jayce on edge and he institutes a blockade between Piltover and Zaun with rigorous searches. Unbeknownst to Jayce, Viktor's colleague is Singed from Zaun and he has been collaborating with him to make the Hex Core workable. Jayce berates Viktor when he gets back from Zaun as his own partner violating his own blockade reflects badly on him. In a moment of frustration, Jayce also expressed his distrust of Zaunites and called them all dangerous people hell-bent on destroying Piltover. When Viktor angrily retorted that he was from Zaun, Jayce realized his prejudice was unbecoming and apologized to Viktor for his reaction. Jayce's antagonistic response to Zaun strained Viktor's relationship with Jayce—and from then on, Viktor begins to keep secret Singed's involvement or that Viktor plans to inject Shimmer into himself in order to make the Hex Core workable.
Ambessa Medarda and Vi encourages Jayce to take independent, offensive action and hurt Silco (the crime boss responsible for escalating tensions between Piltover and Zaun) by shutting down his Shimmer enterprise. Jayce leads an unsanctioned raid on one of Silco's Shimmer manufacturing factories but after he accidentally kills one of the child workers that was working there, Jayce loses his appetite for war.
Meanwhile, Viktor's shimmer injections make his body tough enough to endure the Hex Core's transformations. After successfully tranforming his leg into living machinery, Viktor eventually attempts to use the Hex Core to transform more of his body. Viktor runs out of shimmer but proceeds with the transformation anyways. He appears to lose control of the Hex Core and was almost utterly consumed by the Hex Core's power. Viktor's assistant Sky walked in on him during the experiment and tried to pull him away from the Hex Core in order to save his life. The Hex Core disintegrates Sky and uses her life force to complete Viktor's transformation before shutting down. When Viktor regained consciousness, he is left distraught by Sky's death.
| “ | "We lost ourselves. Lost our dream. In the pursuit of great, we failed to do good." |
| — , The Monster You Created | |
Viktor scatters Sky's ashes in the ravine they used to play at as kids. Feeling depressed from her death, Viktor considers falling to his death but is accidentally interrupted from committing suicide by Jayce. Jayce and Viktor reminisce about how life was simpler when their only concern was creating the science that they thought would leave the world better. Although Jayce thought Viktor would insist on destroying his hextech hammer, Viktor instead made Jayce promise to destroy the Hex Core. Both Viktor and Jayce are aware that without the Hex Core, Viktor will die of his disease. Nevertheless, Jayce acquiesced to Viktor's request.
Ultimately, Jayce chooses to broker a peace with Silco and grant Zaun independence. Jayce has Viktor by his side when they both advocate the proposal for peace to the Council of Clans.
When Jayce was popularizing Hextech in Piltover, Jayce sought out the guidance of Councilor Mel Medarda. Mel aided Jayce in bypassing the red tape obstructing his agenda, advised him how to maneuver in politics, and she even convinced the Council of Clans to elevate Jayce to a councilor himself. Eventually Mel became Jayce's confidant and Jayce confided in her about his personal and professional issues. The two fell in love with each other and became lovers. Jayce held Mel in high regard and felt nothing was impossible with Mel by his side.
While originally glancing her from his workshop trying to steal his possessions, Jayce would truly meet Vi during one council meeting. There Caitlyn would bring Vi to testify in front of other councilors what they have to do in order to deal with Silco, berating them to take serious action against his operations. Jayce would agree with her measures despite other councilors' objections. This would ultimately lead Vi to approach Jayce privately in his forge while he was creating his Mercury Hammer. She would offer him a chance to storm Silco's shimmer factory. During that discussion she would take the Atlas gauntlets as her new signature weapons.
During the attack Jayce and Vi would battle side-by-side, taking out shimmer enhanced goons. During the battle, a child got caught in Jayce's crossfire and plummets to his death next to the Shimmer forge. Jayce was devastated by this, but Vi told him that this is a daily occurance down in Zaun and that the situation in Zaun will only fester unless they continue to attack Silco. Jayce orders her to give back the gauntlets, but Vi refuses, seemingly ready for another fight. He would leave her with his creations, seeing no point in a fatal conflict. Jayce and Vi go their separate ways, with Jayce leaving Vi to wage her war against Silco alone.
Jayce hated Silco ever since he discovered he was responsible for the escalating tensions between Piltover and the Undercity (a.k.a. the precursor to the nation of Zaun). However, Silco and Jayce agree on peace terms following Jayce and Vi's enforcer attack on one of his Shimmer manufacturing factories. Silco's excessive demands (Silco's demands included free trade routes, unrestricted access to the Hexgates, blanket amnesty, and sovereignty for Zaun) displeased Jayce, but Silco knew he would capitulate to them when he asked to parley, which showed Silco that Jayce didn't have the determination to follow through with future military attacks.
Jayce ultimately agrees to Silco's demands as he didn't want more innocents to die and he hopes once Silco ceased hostilities, both Piltover and Zaun could find common ground regarding the threats to both their cities. Jayce however, stipulated he must end all Shimmer production, return the stolen Hextech gemstone, and also hand over to the Piltover authorities since he needs Jinx to pay for her crimes. Silco argues that her crimes were ordered by him and that he is responsible for her actions, but since Jayce cannot punish Silco since he needs him to control Zaun, Jinx must be arrested to show that justice is still being served. Jayce tells Silco no one on the Council of Clans would have offered him this deal aside from him, as many in Piltover would prefer the undercity to be simply slaughtered by Piltover's technologically superior military force.
