*{{ii|Hexdrinker}}'s antimagic death-save [[shield]] may take ability based opponents by surprise, allowing the holder to follow through with devastating damage, or to make a great escape.

*{{ii|Hexdrinker|Hexdrinker's}} antimagic 'death ward' [[absorption shield|shield]] can help the blade's owner to fight through otherwise lethal AP damage, which may take opponents by surprise, especially if they are looking for an all-out kill.
*The amount the shield effect blocks is large in the early to mid game. As the amount blocked does not scale with any statistic except magic resistance, it is most effective when bought early, before magic users can become powerful enough to easily overcome the shield.
+
*The amount the shield blocks is flat - i.e. it does not grow via champion level or any statistic in the game. This means that while the shield's effectiveness in early to mid game is phenomenal, it becomes less effective as enemy champions grow stronger (and are thus more easily able to overcome the shield.)

**Players can upgrade their {{ii|Hexdrinker}} into a {{ii|Maw of Malmortius}} to continue to benefit from this item choice in mid to later game. In extreme late game scenarios however, the shield can still be overpowered by well developed and funded champions.
