There is one Support icon support item that generates gold, meaning it is not present as a reward anywhere else in the game and only exists for their user. This item increases passive Gold icon gold generation, but its main objective requires and rewards active participation and engagement in the lane, either against enemy minions or enemy champions.

Types[]

There are two ways to actively generate gold. Completing the quest objective upgrades the item.

  • World Atlas World Atlas (tier 1) and Runic Compass Runic Compass (tier 2)
    • Minion sharing: Requiress the support to take part in Minion icon minion killing. It rewards sticking to another allied champion. One charge is provided every 20 seconds.
    • Poking: Requires interaction with the enemy Champion icon champions in order to maximize gold gains. Most of the gold is awarded for combat. It can be difficult to maximize its potential, because an enemy champion needs to be damaged with an ability or basic attack every 20 seconds.

Gold per 10 seconds[]

The following calculations do not take into account the Gold icon base gold generation that all players in a game may passively gain.

Gold income (gold per 10 seconds)
Item Passive gold Minion sharing Poking (ranged) Poking (melee)
World Atlas World Atlas 3 10.5 13 14
Runic Compass Runic Compass 5 15 16 17
Bounty of Worlds Bounty of Worlds
(and its upgrades)
5

Quest completion time

Considering the above information, it takes the following time to complete the support's quest (400 Gold 400 each for Tier 1 and 2 support items).

Time needed to complete quest (in minutes)
Item Passive gold Minion sharing Poking (ranged) Poking (melee)
World Atlas World Atlas 22.2 6.3 5.1 4.8
Runic Compass Runic Compass 13.3 4.4 4.2 3.9

Duo[]

Building support items on two or more champions is not viable due to the increasing disincentives introduced over the years which are meant to result in an overall significant deficit of gold for the team. Major changes regarding support item rules were made within patches V9.23, V12.4, and V14.2. If a team owns more than one support item, they will gain heavily reduced gold from minions after excessive minion farming, their gold value kill bounty still increases as normal, and objective bounties are much less likely to activate.

The minion farming penalty reads:

  • "Receives diminishing gold from excessive minion kills":
    • Before 5 minutes, killing (7 ÷ number of support items on user's team) minions or more reduces gold Gold gold from minion kills by 80%.
      • After 5 minutes, killing (4 ÷ number of support items on user's team) minions per minute causes the gold Gold gold from minion kills to be reduced by 50% − 80% (based on number of minion kills).
    • This penalty accounts for all champions on a team that have a Support item; every champion with the item will contribute towards hitting the gold penalty.

Notes[]

The precursor to this series of items were the Philosopher's Stone Philosopher's Stone, Heart of Gold Heart of Gold, Kage's Lucky Pick Kage's Lucky Pick, and Avarice Blade Avarice Blade. They were changed so that each item's effect was unique and exclusive to each other in V1.0.0.120. However the first edition of the support items as they currently appear was in patch V3.14 in 2013, with the "Favor", "Spoils of War", and "Tribute" named item effects, which assign the player a Quest to complete. In V9.23, these items were reworked significantly; the patch introduced item variants with different stats, added a penalty to last-hit income in order to discourage multiple champions buying these items, removed the Ancient Coin Ancient Coin / "Favor" line of items, and lifted the requirement to combine the support item with a Sightstone Sightstone in order to carry Wards because of the introduction of Watchful Wardstone Watchful Wardstone and its upgrade Vigilant Wardstone Vigilant Wardstone. In patch V14.1, the two remaining lines of items were consolidated into a single item while maintaining their respective effect, and players are instead given an assortment of items to upgrade to upon fully completing their Quest.
