This Changes Everything Emote
"I thought maybe you could love me like you used to. Even though I'm... different. But you changed too. So, here's to the new us."

In Dev Update - Champs, Lore & More, Laura 'poisonpixxi' DeYoung, Head of IP Creative for Riot Games, elaborated on their new approach to narrative cohesiveness by ironing out any inconsistencies that have sprung up over the years.

This article contains information that conflicts with this new narrative and will most likely be changed/moved in the following year(s).

Brackern[]

Surrounded around the Shuriman Continent are several clans of Brackern, including clans in the Shuriman desert.

Dormun[]

The Dormun are gigantic, slow-moving creatures protected with large chitinous plates covering their body. In the harsh conditions of Shurima they have evolved to survive the perpetual drought by utilizing an unknown sense to locate hidden reservoirs of water. Incidentally, certain nomadic tribes have built themselves a permanent home upon the backs of these beasts where they clean the creature and hunt any airborne pests who venture near.

Eka'Sul[]

Desert goats that travel in herds.

Mwatis[]

Mwatis are goatlike creatures with large plated casques on their heads. Mwati wool and plate are prised for felting and insulation.

Kmiros[]

Gigantic scarabs that roam in swarms, looking for unfortunate travelers to feed on. They seem to be common prey for Rammus Rammus.

Outerbeasts[]

Beside the Xer'Sai, other creatures from the Void, referred to as 'outerbeasts', can be found in the desert.

  • Xer'Sai: Creatures from the Void that plague the southern deserts. They are the size of big dogs on average, but can be smaller or much bigger. Rek'Sai Rek'Sai, as the queen, is by far the largest and most dangerous of her species. Xer'sai burst from their small burrows and ravage anything nearby, to the detriment of desert caravans. Once dead, the Xer'sai decompose at an abnormally rapid rate and become inedible.

Ralsiji[]

Large and aggressive minotaur-like creatures. They are humpbacked quadrupeds with long limbs and thick horns.

Shuriman Camel[]

A breed of camels native to the deserts of Shurima and are used by caravans as well as common folk as primary mode of transportation. Despite being well-suited for lengthy travels in the desert landscape, they are still prey to a many predator such as the Xer'Sai.

Sandswimmers[]

Shurima Sandswimmers

Sandswimmers

Sandswimmers are massive quadrupedal creatures that traverse the Shuriman desert in cyclical patterns. They got their name due to their preferred method of travel. Their narrow bodies and webbed feet are perfectly design for swimming under the sand. They feed on bugs and other small creatures most desert beasts ignore. Scavengers will often memorize the predictable paths these creatures take, and jump onto their backs to ride as far as they wish.

Skallashi[]

The Skallashi are large quadrupedal herbivores. These hardy beasts of burden are common across Shurima, ideally suited to the harsh desert environment. Their key body feature is their long legs. Notoriously bad-tempered, they are nevertheless treated with great reverence. Their brown hides are often painted with sacred symbols of protection, and their horns hung with totems and charms. While these creatures are mostly used for travel and carrying heavy loads, on some larger skallashi people are able to built miniature rooms for more comfortable travel. To own one is often considered a sign of considerable prosperity.

"People change."
— Ekko to Vi Vi, The Boy Savior
Separator

Ekko is a Zaun Crest icon Zaunite inventor and the leader of the Firelight Crest Firelights. He is also the childhood friend of Vi Vi and Jinx Jinx. Hardened from the harsh tragedies that he experienced as a child, Ekko aspires to free the undercity from Silco's Silco's rule and is willing to put everything he has, including his own life, at stake to achieve it.

Background[]

Early Life[]

Ekko was a genius child inventor and worked as an assistant for Benzo Benzo at his pawn shop. He would often eavesdrop on Benzo's more private conversations even when the man would send him away, which made him privy to certain transactions and secrets that he would often share with his friends: Vi Vi, Powder Powder, Mylo Mylo, and Claggor Claggor. Although he never participated in any of their heists, they came to consider him as part of their little gang and eventually gave him the nickname "Little Man."

Growing up, Ekko looked up to Vi, who taught him some basic fighting techniques, and often played a game with Powder where she would try to shoot him with a paintball gun.[1] Also, whenever he got covered in grease from work, Vi would be the one to take him down to the junk heap and hose him clean.[2]

Hexgem Incident[]

While working at Benzo's one day, a man a man from Piltover came into the shop and bought items from him.[1][3] Ekko was easily able to charge him twice the items' normal price and then followed him. Thinking his friends could make quick cash off of the man by burglarizing him, Ekko told Vi about his lavish workshop. The plan backfired when Powder Powder accidentally caused an explosion in the man's workshop, initiating an investigation that led Piltover Police Crest enforcers to Benzo's to confront Vander Vander.

Despite being kicked out by Benzo prior so he and Vander could speak privately, Ekko listened in through a contraption he'd built above the room and found out that Vander had a deal with Sheriff Grayson Grayson,[1] which he later told Vi with some hesitation.[3]

Ekko later witnessed Benzo's murder in the hands of a Shimmer-affected Deckard Deckard under Silco's Silco's orders. He saw Silco and his men take Vander away and later tearfully told Vi where to find them — Silco's Shimmer factory. Shortly after, multiple explosions at the factory resulted in multiple deaths and Vi's disappearance,[4] leading him to assume that she had also perished. Meanwhile, Powder Powder was taken in by Silco, causing the two to be estranged.

Formation of the Firelights[]

Ekko rallied the oppressed youth abused by Silco's criminal enterprise and created a safe community for them all. Forced to find a means to survive, Ekko eventually came to live in hiding with a group of other children, building their base in a rare space that housed one of the very few trees—if not the only tree—to survive in Zaun. The group called themselves the Firelight Crest Firelights, after the glowing insects found in Zaun,[2] and began sabotaging Silco's shipments of Shimmer in hopes of hindering its damage to their home.[5][2]

After Jinx Jinx bombs several Enforcers in order to steal a hextech gemstone, Silco has his man Marcus Marcus incriminate the Firelights as the culprits of Jinx's terrorism. The Firelights are then hunted and killed by the Enforcers on Marcus' orders.

While the Firelights fend for themselves, Ekko discovers that Vi Vi came back to the Undercity with an enforcer named Caitlyn Caitlyn. At this point in time, he didn't know if he could trust Vi since her sister was working for Silco and she could be doing the same—and the fact that she was associating with an enforcer concerned him. Ekko had his Firelights spy on Vi and her companion Caitlyn until Vi had a reunion with Jinx. After witnessing that Vi, Caitlyn, and Jinx had tension; Ekko orders his Firelights to engage the three women in battle. The Firelights knock out Vi and Caitlyn and kidnap them—they also injure Jinx, steal the hextech gemstone from her, and escape her wrath. Having eluded Jinx, the Firelights take Caitlyn and Vi to their home base to be interrogated.

Confrontation on the Bridge[]

Back at the Firelights' hideout, Ekko interrogated Vi and ascertained that she hasn't been corrupted. Ekko embraced Vi as a friend and catches her up on the history of the Firelights and Jinx. Since Vi vouched for Caitlyn, Ekko offers to escort Caitlyn to Piltover. After a brief argument about the Enforcers' culpability in the Firelights' troubles, Ekko questions Caitlyn about the relevance of the hextech gemstone to the Piltovans. Caitlyn explains that the gemstone was stolen by Jinx and could be weaponized by a Zaunite malefactor, which she believes is the reason why the Enforcers are being more aggressive in Zaun. Ekko considers keeping the gemstone and weaponizing it against Silco, thus possibly preventing more Firelight casualties. Although Caitlyn sympathizes with Ekko's plight, she persuades him that the cycle of violence will never stop unless they bring the gemstone to Piltover and reveal Silco as the true cause of the chaos and corruption. Ekko acquiesces to giving the gemstone back to the Piltover Council but demands that he delivers it to them personally.

However, on their way to Piltover, they are intercepted by Sheriff Marcus and a group of Enforcers, who try to kill both Ekko and Caitlyn. Jinx intervened and tries to kill everyone with bombs. Ekko stays behind to hold off Jinx while Caitlyn and Vi escape to Piltover, with the hope that they can set the record straight. Ekko and Jinx fight a one-on-one duel which paralleled their childhood fighting games that they used to play. Although Ekko usually lost those games when they were children, he defeated Jinx in a real battle and was ready to land the final blow before seeing Jinx's face, which reminded him of the Powder he used to know. That sentimentality distracted him, and she ended up detonating a bomb, injuring Ekko and gravely injuring herself.

Heimerdinger's Rescue[]

Ekko escaped the blast of Jinx's bomb but injured his leg and damaged his hoverboard. He managed to bring himself to the Zaun side of the Bridge of Progress, where he is eventually discovered by Heimerdinger Heimerdinger. With the boy's leg injured,[6] Heimerdinger helps Ekko travel back to the Firelights' base where the two began discussing their thoughts on Ekko's inventions, particularly his hoverboard.[7]

Appearance[]

Ekko is a young man of average height, slightly a bit tall. He wears a typical firelights uniform and when he does, He wears a white face covering mask similar to an owl, His biceps and arms are very muscular, but he has a lean stature.

However when the mask is off, He has dark skin, Along with hazel-brown eyes that are usually narrowed, His face is serious and stone-hearted. He has a white colored Dread-hawk with a silver bands on one of frontal pieces, He also has white hour glass face paint, that goes from a little bit higher from above his nose, to a few centimeters away from his hairline.

Personality[]

As a child, Ekko was carefree, mischievous, and brilliant. Benzo Benzo relied on Ekko to repair mechanical items in his pawn shop and Ekko even had spy devices installed in the shop, which illustrates his expertise as a tinkerer. He was close friends with Vi Vi, Claggor Claggor, Mylo Mylo, and Powder Powder—and was known as "Little Man" in their gang. Ekko aspired to be as strong as Vi and followed her like she was the leader of their group of friends. Ekko was mischievous in that he would give information to his friends—that he overheard at Benzo's shop—that could produce plunder for his friends. However, his childhood innocence ended after he witnessed his employer and paternal figure, Benzo, murdered by Silco Silco and his goons.

As time passed by, all his old childhood friends either died, disappeared, or became his enemy. Ekko became hardened and was forced to mature quickly. He rallied the oppressed youth abused by Silco's criminal enterprise, and with perseverance and ingenuity, carved out a safe place for them to rebuild their lives. Ekko's resistance became known as the Firelight Crest Firelights, and he took on leadership of the organization. As a leader, Ekko is more tactical, and even his raids against Silco's Shimmer-distribution operations are competently scheduled and organized. Ekko is also more confrontational, as he even stands up to Vi now. For the sake of the safety of his Firelights, Ekko is more distrustful. With Silco holding power over the Undercity and even the Piltover Police Crest Enforcers, Ekko has to vet even Vi. Many of his friends and loved ones died to ensure the Firelights' freedom, so Ekko is determined to honor their sacrifices by ensuring his Firelights live happy, safe lives; even if they must overcome many hardships. Nevertheless, he mourns their deaths and memorialized everyone the Firelights lost in a mural at their hideout.

Abilities[]

  • Dropboarder: Ekko is incredibly proficient in hoverboarding and can fly evasive maneuvers around his enemies with great mobility. He is also shown to have great reflexes, as he was able to easily dodge and block shots from Jinx's handgun while on his hoverboard.
  • Guerilla Warfare: As the leader of the Firelights, Ekko is knowledgeable in the tactics of guerilla warfare, having using them effectively against Silco's goons for many years. He is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat, albeit not on the same level as Vi, and is proficient at using self-made weapons, such as his club and crystal bombs, against his opponents in battle.
  • Inventor: Despite not having any formal education, Ekko is a brilliant engineer and inventor, having tinkered with machines ever since he was a child. As the boss of the Firelights, he would use these talents to create numerous weapons and gadgets to aid him in his war with Silco, which includes his signature hoverboard, his club, and the unique explosives that he and his subordinates use in battle.

Relations[]

Arcane Vi profileiconViolet Violet[]

As a child, Ekko looked up to Vi as a big sister who looked out for everyone—and he was saddened when she presumably died after her rescue mission to save Vander. Ekko felt guilty that he didn't go with her to save Vander since he thinks he could have prevented the disasterous outcome. Since Vi disappeared for years, she was one of the many people depicted in the Firelights' mural, which memorialized the loved ones they've lost over the years.

As an adult, Ekko was informed that Vi came back to the Undercity with an enforcer named Caitlyn. At this point in time, he didn't know if he could trust Vi since her sister was working for Silco and she could be doing the same—and the fact that she was associating with an enforcer concerned him. Eventually, Vi convinced Ekko that she was still the same Vi who used to take him down to the junk heap and hose him down when he got covered in grease. After feeling comfortable that Vi hasn't been corrupted, Ekko embraced Vi as a friend and once again trusts her to have his best interests at heart. Vi convinced Ekko to work with the Piltovans to defeat Silco. Ekko traveled to Piltover with Caitlyn to reveal Silco's conspiracy and return the hextech gemstone, but was attacked by Sheriff Marcus and also Jinx. Ekko stayed behind to hold off Jinx while he entrusted Vi and Caitlyn to set the record straight in Piltover and eventually gain their support in stopping Silco.

Arcane Jinx profileiconJinx ArcaneSquare Powder/Jinx[]

Ekko and Powder Powder were childhood best friends, often praticing fighting moves, or playing around together. He had a crush on her at that time ("I had a crush... until you started talking to the gun"). When he and the Firelights established their base, they painted a mural of all the people they've lost; Ekko apparently painted Powder as part of the mural, signifying that he believed his childhood friend was gone. As adults, Jinx, Powder's new identity, willingly worked for Silco—and she killed many Firelights on his behalf and fought Ekko several times. During the fight between him and Jinx Jinx on the bridge, it paralleled their childhood fighting games that they used to play.

Caitlyn Kiramman Caitlyn Kiramman[]

Caitlyn and Vi were kidnapped by the Firelights during a battle with Jinx and were taken to their hideout. Caitlyn assumed that the Firelights worked for Silco and were going to hurt Vi during her interrogation. Caitlyn was shocked to learn however, that Vi and the Firelights' leader, Ekko, were childhood friends and so Ekko chose to trust Caitlyn for the moment because Vi vouched for her. As a gesture of goodwill, Ekko offers to escort Caitlyn to Piltover.

Ekko accuses the Piltovans of trying to destroy the Firelights and their home but Caitlyn argues that it is a misunderstanding, and that Piltover was led to believe that the Firelights worked for Silco. Ekko takes offense to Caitlyn's remarks as he believes it is a coverup, since the Piltover Enforcers are paid by Silco to hunt and kill many of his Firelight friends. Vi defuses the situation by defending Caitlyn and telling Ekko that Caitlyn isn't his enemy. When Ekko demanded to know the relevance of the hextech gemstone to the Piltovans, Caitlyn explains that the gemstone was stolen by Jinx and could be weaponized by a Zaunite malefactor, which she believes is the reason why the Enforcers are being more aggressive in Zaun. Caitlyn hopes that by shutting down Silco's criminal enterprise, the Firelights won't need to hide anymore, and Piltover and Zaun can begin to heal.

Cecil B Cecil B. Heimerdinger[]

Heimerdinger finds an injured Ekko and his hoverboard underneath the bridge that connects Piltover to Zaun. Ekko was surprised to find a Piltover councilor on the Zaun side of the river, but Heimerdinger revealed that he was just a normal citizen now. Both Ekko and Heimerdinger were trying to help the residents of their opposite city but were rebuffed for it. With Ekko injured, Heimerdinger helped Ekko reach his home, the Firelight Crest Firelights' hideout. Heimerdinger marveled at how much the Firelights accomplished at a short amount of time; to which Ekko replied that having their lives on the line was a great motivator. Although Heimerdinger questioned why the Firelights use hoverboards for transportation when more efficient and safer options exist, Ekko replied that it is essential for people to get what they need to live; in addition to what they need to survive.

Benzo Benzo and Vander Vander[]

Benzo was Ekko's employer as a child and was seemingly a paternal figure in Ekko's life. Ekko would use his tinkering skills to repair mechanical items in Benzo's pawn shop and was even trusted to be a salesman of his wares. Ekko was devestated when Silco Silco's goons murdered Benzo and mourned Benzo's death. He also respected Vander as he was the protective and compassionate leader of the Undercity. Ekko was also saddened by his death. Both Benzo and Vander are depicted in the Firelights' mural, which memorializes the loved ones that the Firelights lost over the years.
