General

Dr. Mundo, the Madman of Zaun

His name comes from two sources: Proto-Germanic *mundo "hand, protection" & unrelated Ibero-Romance mundo "world" (like in Spanish, Portuguese, etc.).
- He is named after Edmundo 'odnumde' Sanchez, by Brandon 'Ryze' Beck.^[1]
Dr. Mundo's dance references the titular character from House, M.D. in turn dancing to Fight the Power by Public Enemy.

Of the five champions that use health as a resource for abilities; Soraka, Vladimir, Olaf and Zac, he himself was the only one whose ultimate ability has a cost, that being 25% of his current health.
In the V1.0.0.115 April Fools' Day patch, the following change regarding Dr. Mundo were jokingly listed：
- Dr. Mundo decided that he enjoys the color blue.
- Dr. Mundo now has mana.
- None of his ability costs have changed.
In the V4.01 April Fools' Day patch, the following change regarding Dr. Mundo was jokingly listed, referencing his infamous "Mundo goes where he pleases" quote.
We decided that allowing the summoner to control Mundo's movement was actually preventing Dr. Mundo from going where he pleases.
- General
  - Movement is now controlled by AI, summoner attack/move functionality removed.
Masochism references the eponymous term for enjoyment derived from being inflicted pain, named after real-life writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.
- This is also mechanically referenced in his kit by gaining a higher AD bonus for how low his health is.
Sadism references the eponymous term for enjoyment derived from inflicting pain on others, named after real-life writer Marquis de Sade.

Dr. Mundo, the Madman of Zaun

Dr. Mundo is one of five champions who use health as a resource for abilities, the other four being Soraka, Vladimir, Olaf and Zac.
Goes Where He Pleases references his infamous "Mundo goes where he pleases" quote.
Following his rework, his kit was given a higher emphasis on medical equipment and terms and makes several references to them.
- Infected Bonesaw was renamed from Infected Cleaver to have Dr. Mundo utilize the actual medical tool.
- Heart Zapper is based on the act of defibrillation.
- Blunt Force Trauma references the term for the eponymous injury type.

Development

Dr. Mundo, the Madman of Zaun

Dr. Mundo is voiced by J.S. Gilbert, who also voices Corporate Mundo, Battlecast Prime Cho'Gath, Gragas, pre-rework Sion, Udyr, and Spirit Guard Udyr.
Dr. Mundo references the titular character(s) from Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.
- His first incarnation (a deformed mutated human surgeon) referenced Dr. Jekyll while his current one references Mr. Hyde.

Dr. Mundo and Corporate Mundo are voiced by Armen Taylor, who also voices 8 Riptide Rex in Legends of Runeterra.^[2]

Lore

Mundo suffered severe mental trauma due to the torture and experimentation he endured at the Osweld Asylum, which had dire consequences on his brain and memory.
- "Mundo" isn't his real name and is instead him misreading the name on his straight jacket.
- Mundo believes he is a doctor because he thinks his straight jacket is a lab coat.

It has been replaced by [[File:"Mundo smash!" OriginalCircle.png|20px|link=]] (Portuguese: Mundo esmaga!), which is actually one of his normal movement/attacking quotes.

He was released in celebration of Snowdown Showdown 2018 along with:
His story is similar to the Beast from the story Beauty and the Beast.
- He is a handsome prince and it was during a party that he got the curse.
- An unwelcome guest came to turn Mundo into a beast.
- Other people in the ball turned into ice, while in the original story, they turned into animated objects.
- He believed his life is the same, and "go where he please" while in the original story, Beast is quite an impolite person.
- Mundo recalls is similar to the scene where Beast returns to his human form. However, Mundo did not success in turning back to normal.
He was cursed by Ice King Twitch (who makes an appearance in the background), by shooting an ice shard in his back.
- In his recall he pulls the shard out, starts to transform back, but then is shot again, causing him to remain in his monstrous form.^[4]

Relations

Mundo tried to "cure" Ekko's friend once but unsucessfully due to Ekko kept reverting his "cure". Despite this, Mundo still somehow remembers the encounter.
