It is presumed that, just like on Earth, they are a subspecies of Gray Wolves, continuously bred to become docile towards Humans. And just like Earth Dogs, they differ greatly in terms of physiology, catered towards a specific purpose within Human society.

Dogs, like cats are domesticated animal companions, and as such have a deep cultural and historical ties to the civilizations of their owners. From shepherding dogs, to guard dogs or hunting dogs, this species is has been bred and shaped to suit the jobs they were required to perform.
The dogs cultural importance can be seen with the constellation of 2 The Messenger of Targon, which is often portrayed as a celestial dog (sometimes also referred to as "Cosmo"). It is said that The Messenger takes care of dogs in the hereafter.
Another example are the canine motifs found in Shuriman mythology, with 
Nasus taking an Ascended form inspired from that mythology.
