Examples of champion skins
( Blood Moon Thresh, Arcade Ezreal, and PROJECT: Zed)

A champion skin refers to an alternate appearance (skin) and/or color scheme (chroma) for any given League of Legends champion.

Most skins can be purchased from the game client's Riot Store using Riot Points while some are only available for a limited time, with a very select few being unobtainable aside from the time they were first released.

Every skin has its own splash artwork displayed in champion select by clicking on the respective thumbnail after selection.

Some skins also give champions different particle effects, voice-overs, and sound effects (their price varies accordingly) while chroma only give a separate color palette and nothing more.

Chroma are purchased in the same fashion as skins and cost 290 each. This was implemented with the Chroma 2.0 update alongside annual sales and the flexible bundles. All chroma can be purchased in a bundled format at a reduced price with its corresponding champion or skin.

Twice a year, an Essence Emporium is held that allows players to purchase a selection of cosmetics with Blue Essence, including both emporium-exclusive items as well as items that are otherwise only be available with RP, such as  Chromas. The first Essence Emporium was held at the start of Season Eight. With the advent of the Essence Emporium, the previously bi-annual Chroma IP Sales will no longer occur.

A chroma can be selected in champion select by clicking on the according color tile on the respective champion/skin thumbnail.

Some skins are released as variants of other skins. The first two variants released— and Urfwick—were created in order to re-release previously limited edition skins in a way that preserved the prestige status of the original. Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank and Lancer Rogue Blitzcrank was the first instance of two skins being released concurrently that are considered variants of each other, and were priced such that you would receive a 30% discount if you already owned the other skin. Based on feedback, Riot has stated that the discount promotion on variant skins will be increased to 45% going forward (where applicable; special releases will not discounted).

Pricing

The names for skin tiers are a mix of the wiki's own choices and Riot official terms.

Ultimate	3250 / 2775	Pushes the boundaries of development by completely reimagining the champion. Brings something new and unexpected to the game. Includes a new model that evolves into different forms, new textures, new splash image, new animations, new visual, new voice over and sounds, as well as additional/bonus content.
Mythic	10	To date, loot exclusive skins are comparable to Epic skins in quality. Currently, no Mythic skins can be purchased directly from the store and must be forged with Gemstones or a File:Mythical Skin token.png Mythical Skin token. However, these skins can drop from loot or can be obtained from reroll. Neo PAX Sivir is the only Mythic skin retired from loot.
	Prestige Edition	These skins are a variation of a skin that includes a unique border, splash and VFX. Some of them are event-specific (require a certain amount of tokens to redeem them) and others are craftable for 100 Prestige points. However, these skins can drop from loot or can be obtained from reroll.
Legendary	1820	A complete reimagining of the champion from the ground up, with total and complete immersion in the fantasy. Includes a new model, new texture, new splash image, new animations, new visuals, new voice over and sounds.
Epic	1350	Drastic changes to the champion bring the fantasy to life. Includes a new model, new texture, new splash image, new animations, new visual effects, new sounds. Sometimes includes: voice processing.
Standard (or Superior)	975	Pushes the champion a step beyond a simple costume change, with more immersive qualities. Includes a new model, new texture and new splash image. Sometimes includes: new animations, visual effects, and sounds where appropriate for the skin's theme, or where the lack of would be detrimental.
Budget (or Deluxe)	750	A simple "costume change" for the champion. Includes a model changes, new texture and new splash image. Sometimes includes: new animations.
Timeworn	520	Texture changes and new splash image. Sometimes includes: small model changes. Visual updates and champion relaunches may increase the quality of these skins, which to-date have not been increased in price. No new skins will be released at the Classic tier in the future.
	460	Only Phantom Karthus.
	390	Only Golden Alistar, Assassin Master Yi and White Mage Veigar.
Chroma	290	New texture. Sometimes includes: recolored particle effects.

Exceptions

• Primetime Draven and Surprise Party Fiddlesticks were released as  Legendary skins "that are permanently on-sale for 975". They will appear in your collection as Legendary skins.
  • Primetime Draven features a unique VO but no other distinguishing traits, and would likely be priced at 975 otherwise.
  • Surprise Party Fiddlesticks features none of the traits associated with high-tier skins, but is notable for being the only skin with unique ability icons ( Dark Wind and Crowstorm). The skin also features a unique over-head Fear icon, which is otherwise consistent across all champions that utilize the crowd control effect.
• Draven Draven was "released at 5000 but is permanently on sale for 500". Only available each April Fools.
• Urf the Manatee is a limited Edition skin that was available for 5000, then on sale for 500 and 50. All proceeds went to charity.
• Urfwick is only available on the Essence Emporium for 150,000.

Sales

A selection of skins, excluding  Legendary and  Ultimate, are put on sale every Monday (at noon PT) at 50% discount. In addition to these sales, an Early Sale occurs within the first 4 or 6 months of a skin's release that discounts the skin one price tier (e.g.  Epic skins go on sale for 975). Early Sales will apply to  Legendary and  Ultimate skins, although Ultimate skins go on sale for 2450, a price-tier not used by other skins.

During the Essence Emporium, a selection of Chromas can be purchased individually for 2000 (the corresponding champion and/or skin must be purchased beforehand). During these sales, the selected Chromas are also reduced to 195. Chroma bundles remain RP exclusive.

The Honor system can reward exclusive skins and chromas:

• Before, these skins were obtained through the system "Refer a friend" but over time this stopped working. With the renewed implementation of honor, these skins come out in level 5 Honor capsules, that drop once a player reaches Honor level 5. "The two skin drops are permanents, and unlock the champion if you don't already own them."

Legacy

Many became Legacy between October 2013 and June 2014 (mostly those from 2009-11 events) so players who already owned the previously-Limited skins received the following benefits as compensation:

• RP equal to the original purchase price.
• Loading screen slice art overlayed with a 'vintage' look.

Under exceptional circumstances, these skins may become available again. Original versions of the skin may receive updated texture details and special loading screen flair.

• was available for general purchase during that year's World Championship, and the skin for 2012 owners features a crown, exclusive visual effects, and vintage loading screen slice art.
• Urfwick was available for Blue Essence purchase during the grand opening of the Essence Emporium, and the Urf the Manatee skin features a crown wreath, and exclusive vintage loading screen slice art.
