There are many type of cards. They can be grouped by regions, by their effects, rarities and so on. This page provides a list of the different types of cards in the game Legends of Runeterra.
By regions
Each card belong to a region. A player can have at most 2 regions in their normal game, limiting the cards they can add to their deck. Choosing what regions to have will defy the playstyle of the deck.
Currently, there are 6 regions.
By in game effects
Playing a card will triggers their effect. Based on the effect, cards can be split into 2 main groups:
- Unit
- Spell
Unit cards
Unit cards will summon an ally unit into the player bench. These units will then directly joins the battlefield, attacking and defending the nexuses.
Unit cards have two big group. Follower are the most common, and they can impact the battlefield until they disappear from the battlefield.
Champion card are special cards a player own. A player can own multiple champion cards, however, when one champion is active, the duplicate cards will transform into special spells, similar to the ones existing, with a unique action: Shuffle a copy of the champion card into the player deck.
Champions can level up, by fulfilling their level up requirements. Level up usually gives the champion card better stats and better abilities.
- Groups
Some Unit cards may belong to a Group, can be identified by a word on the top of the card. Several cards interact specifically with groups. Currently, there are the following Groups:
Although not a Group, "Crimson" also has cards that interact with cards of this series.
Spell cards
Spells provide some instant effect to the board. Depends on the type card, the effect can happen immidiately, or be resolved in a spell stack. For more information, visit Spell.

By rarity
These type are determined by how rare and how much a card cost in the game. Currently, there are 5 rarities:
Wildcards, although by themselves are not playable cards, can be traded into cards. Each rarity have their own version of wildcard.
