General

  • In 'Aurelion Sol: The Star Forger Returns' his hand gesture resembles the old Riot Games Inc. fist intro.
  • A lot of his animations and visual effects were inspired by celestial objects and atoms.
  • Aurelion Sol's lower body is not part of his in-game hitbox, which is why it is semi-transparent.
  • Starsurge Starsurge is almost tied with Hawkshot Hawkshot for being the potentially longest-ranged basic ability. As long as Aurelion Sol keeps up with Starsurge Starsurge, the star will be able to travel from one end of the map to the other.
    • A demonstration can be seen here.
  • Comet of Legend Comet of Legend is tied with Vision of Empire Vision of Empire for being the longest limited-range ability in League of Legends, at 7500 units.
    • Additionally, it is the longest-ranged dash in the game.
  • In Ultra Rapid Fire, Center of the Universe Center of the Universe can have up to 6 stars orbiting around Aurelion Sol with increased speed, simply by leveling up.
    • Interestingly, this is the only non-stat modification made to any champion in URF, suggesting this may have originally been an intended feature which was scrapped from the champion before release.
  • The name of the concept character from which Aurelion Sol spurred from, Ao Shin Ao Shin, could be a reference to Ao Qin, the Dragon King of the South Sea.

Development

  • Aurelion Sol is voiced by Neil Kaplan.
  • Aurelion Sol was the second champion released in 2016, conceived three years earlier as Ao Shin Ao Shin (who made a cameo in Spirit Guard Udyr's Spirit Guard Udyr's promotional comic).[1]
    • Ao Shin had an ability resembling a global-ranged Resonating Strike Resonating Strike: he would send a storm cloud in the target direction, marking enemies hit and allowing him to dash to the target as a massive bolt of lightning (the idea showed enough promise to be picked up in the future).
    • Aurelion Sol later received a skin a skin where he is called Ao Shin in universe.
  • A teaser called 'He has Returned' featuring Pantheon Pantheon looking up to the night sky circulated on the League of Legends Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
  • Aurelion Sol combines two Latinate words.
    • Aurelion is a homophonous pun on Aurelian < Latin Aurelianus < Aurelius < Aureus < ultimately aurum 'gold'.
    • Sol is Latin cognate to English "sun", referencing the relatively obscure Roman deity Sol, whose cult was later promoted by emperor Aurelian & the god elevated into Sol Invictus.
      • The intended meaning, overall, might have been "Golden Sun" Sol Aureus.
        • Coincidentally enough the Oriental Ao Shin became the Latin Aurelion Sol, all the while retaining his initials.
      • Aurelion Sol Aurelion Sol & Aphelios Aphelios both derive from PIE *sóh₂wl̥.
    • It also probably had to do with the Roman emperor Aurelian who, coincidentally, instituted the cult of Sol Invictus.
  • Luke 'Rabid Llama' Rinard specifically set out to make Aurelion Sol's personality distinctive from other popular culture dragons such as Smaug from The Lord of the Rings and Paarthurnax from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
    • Primary inspirations were The Great Owl from The Secret of NIMH (for being awe-inspiring and whose power and wisdom are worth the risk of seeking out) and David Bowie (for his effortless, marvelous, and beautiful demeanor, his 'inspired' creations, and his 'justified' rockstar arrogance)
  • At one point Aurelion Sol had a really elongated body, described as 10-12 Teemos Teemos in length, which people naturally wanted to use to snake between and coil around their opponents.
    • However, this body ended up taking up most of his power budget (he'd have to be really fast to constrict his opponent and/or durable to survive the try) as well as causing technical concerns relating to brush concealment.

Lore

  • Aurelion Sol is a cosmic being capable of creating and destroying stars with the flick of his fingers.
  • When Aurelion Sol dies, he dissipates into a dragon-like constellation. This may indicate that Celestial Dragons, such as himself and Inviolus Vox, are formed as constellations, as are normal celestials.
    • As matter imitates the shape of greater energies, similar to how a logarithmic spiral is found in a nautilus shell and a galaxy, terrestrial dragons are shaped after their celestial counterparts, even though they have no bloodline connection.
  • According to a Q&A with Riot about Aurelion Sol, it is mentioned that during his story's development they had an idea that some of the 'celestial beings' that Aurelion mentions were actually his sisters, whom control other aspects of space such as Gravity or Dark Matter. Whether or not this is still canon is unknown.[citation needed]
    • It is known that Aurelion Sol is not the only celestial dragon, based on his quotes and later Legends of Runeterra icon Legends of Runeterra.[2]
    • This is further implied by when Swain Swain strikes Aurelion Sol with Ravenous Flock Ravenous Flock, asking him "What is this about... siblings?".
  • Aurelion Sol is kept submissive to Targon through their power to destroy stars. While he still possesses a free will, the agony induced by the destruction of stars is too great for him not to do their bidding.[3]
  • Narrative Writer Jared Rosen rates him as the most knowledgeable known being in the universe, tied with Swain Swain and ahead of Zoe Zoe.[4]

  • The 'seven generations of worshippers' mentioned in his skin bio references how seven years have passed since Ao Shin Ao Shin was teased in 2013 until the release of the skin (and him by proxy) in 2020.

Relations

  • As one of the oldest living beings in the universe, Aurelion Sol has witnessed the rise and fall of countless worlds. Even so, the one that piqued his interest and curiosity was Runeterra, as he did not know who created it, "only that it had not been him".[5]
    • Targon Crest icon Mount Targon has direct cultural and historical ties to him, being the highest and therefore most accessible location for him to act from as well as being the Aspects' homeland.
      • Aurelion Sol expresses his hatred for Targon's actions of deceiving and enslaving him in order to use his celestial power as a weapon against the Void.
        • Aurelion Sol described his disdain for Leona Leona and Diana Diana for worshiping the Runeterran sun and moon, respectively, viewing the practice as naïve and short-sighted. Additionally, he points out that the light worshipped by the Lunari is identical to the light worshipped by the Solari, since the moon's light is merely a reflection of sunlight. In this respect, Aurelion Sol is one of only a handful of champions to give meta-commentary on the League of Legends canon.[6]
        • Aurelion Sol and Zoe Zoe appear to be well-acquainted - she is the only Targonian mentioned by Aurelion Sol that appears to offer him aid, as defined in her biography: She "felt sorry for this poor “space doggy,” and vowed to do what she could to protect him."[7]
        • As told in his Legends of Runeterra icon Legends of Runeterra voice lines, Aurelion Sol has not decided what he will do when he is finished obliterating Runeterra. He only describes ultimate goal: The total annihilation of Runeterra, starting with Targon.[8]
    • Aurelion Sol is fully aware of the existence of other celestial entities such as Kindred Kindred, Bard Bard, and Soraka Soraka. He also claims to possess knowledge which would lie outside that which has been revealed by canon lore, such as a detailed understanding of Illaoi's deity, Nagakabouros.[9][10]
